Innsbruck, a City that Many would Love to Call Home:
Innsbruck markets itself as the Capital of the Alps and it’s no wonder that the city was twice chosen to host the Winter Olympics (1964 und 1976).
Wedged between two mountain chains, Innsbruck is positioned right in the middle of the Tirol, one of the nine provinces of Austria famous for its mountains and ski runs.
With an abundance of ski resorts, ski runs and good tourist infrastructure, Innsbruck is an ideal destination for anyone looking for ski holidays. Popular activities in Innsbruck in winter include skiing, snowboarding, ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, and ice-skating. Sporting attractions include the Bergisel Ski Jump, Olympic Hall, Hydro Electric Arena, New Tivoli Stadium and the Bob Sleigh Run.
In summer the region provides sporting enthusiasts and thrill seekers with a whole host of outdoor activities such as cycling, mountain biking and paragliding. For less intense activities there’s walking and hiking in the beautiful Karwendel Alpine Park or the Zirbenweg trail on Patscherkofel.
There’s More to Innsbruck than Sports
But Innsbruck is not about skiing or sports only. We visited in winter and as non-skiers, we found plenty of interest here.
Innsbruck’s eventful past is reflected in buildings and monuments like the Imperial Palace, Ambras Palace, Ottoburg and the Wilten Basilica, all with their own interesting histories. Many of the monuments built by Emperor Maximilian I, such as the world famous Golden Roof and his tomb at the Imperial Church, still exist today.
Whilst its proud imperial history gives Innsbruck its culture and glamour, there’s also a modern side to Innsbruck. This is a university town, full of youthful energy and bars, pubs, discos and cafes.
Like most city centres, Innsbruck has it share of modern shops. But if you prefer shopping with a local flavour and tradition, then head for the Old Town. See our post on Gift Shopping on your Innsbruck Holiday.
Set alongside a river and surrounded by mountains and beautiful scenery, Innsbruck is a kind of travel destination that many would love to call home.
