Located in southeastern Europe, the Republic of Bulgaria borders five countries and the Black Sea and occupies the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula.

Bulgaria shares a border with Turkey and Greece to the south, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia to the west, Romania to the north and the Black Sea to the east. The Danube River, Europe’s second longest, forms much of Bulgaria’s northern border and is the country's only navigable river.

Bulgaria's geography ranges from sunny Mediterranean beaches to snow-capped Alpine mountain ranges. It mostly comprises hills interspersed with plateaus, with major flatlands in north (Danubian Plateau, extending across entire country) and centre (Thracian Plain). The average altitude in Bulgaria is 470 meters. In fact, Bulgaria comprises portions of the classical regions of Thrace, Moesia, and Macedonia.

The main characteristic of Bulgaria's topography is alternating bands of high and low terrain that extend east to west across the country. From north to south, those bands are the Danubian Plateau, the Balkan Mountains (called Stara Planina, meaning old mountains in Bulgarian), the central Thracian Plain, and the Rhodope Mountains.

The southern edge of the Danubian Plateau blends into the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, the Bulgarian part of the Carpathian Mountains. At that point, they become the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria.

Hilly country and plains are found in the southeast, along the Black Sea coast in the east, and along Bulgaria's main river, the Danube in the north.

Bulgaria has over 10 major national parks and many reservation areas. There are many spas in the country, which has some 500 deposits of mineral waters with more than 1,600 water sources.

Sofia, the nation's capital and largest city lies in the upper Iskur River valley in western Bulgaria, just south of the Balkan Mountains. The largest cities in Bulgaria include the capital, Sofia, the second-largest city Plovdiv, followed by the seaside capital of Varna and the beautiful port town of Bourgas, plus the aristocratic town of Rousse.
