Since the coronation of the first Czech king in 1086 and up to the coronation of the last Czech king in 1836, all have travelled the processional route to their coronation. This processional route has come to be known as the Royal Route and today it is one of Prague’s most popular and beautiful sightseeing route.

The Royal Route

In the past, when the king had more than just a ceremonial role, the crowning of a king was a very important event in the lives of the people. The coronation ceremony was a very elaborate affair, involving many customary practices and days of festivities.

St Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle is where the coronation of Czech kings have mostly taken place and the Royal Route is the traditional path to the coronation.

Although the streets and street names were not what they are today, the processional route has generally left from where the Republic Square is today. The procession then proceeded to the Old Town, across the Charles Bridge to the other side of the river. It then travelled to the Lesser Quarter Town Square, then through Nerudova Street and up to Pohorelec, making its way to the Strahov Monastery. From there it continued to Hradcany Square to St Vitus Cathedral, where the actual coronation ceremony took place.

Flights to Prague

Prague Airport is the hub for Czech Airlines, Smart Wings, Travel Service and Wizz Air. About 52 airlines fly into and out of Prague Airport connecting passengers to about 130 destinations worldwide. With the number of budget airlines with flights to Prague, this airport is seeing increasing passenger traffic.

Prague Airport Transfers

Passengers arriving at Prague Airport have a choice of public transport, private transfers, car rentals or taxis to get to Prague city centre and elsewhere.

Public Transport

The public transportation to and from Prague city centre involves a combination of bus and metro as follows:

By Bus/Metro to the City:

Take bus number 119 to the Dejvická metro station, and then transfer to the metro green line (Line A) or tram

Take bus number 100 to Zlicín metro station, and then transfer to metro yellow line (Line B). Yellow Line B will take you to Mustek station in the town centre.

Take bus number 179 to Nové Butovice station for metro yellow Line B.

When the metro is closed after midnight, the night bus number 510 runs from the airport to 4 transfer points on the tram route.

There are bus stops at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (at T2 the stop is in front of Arrival Hall). Journey time ranges from 24 to 53 minutes, depending on which metro line you are connecting with.

You must buy your ticket before travelling. Tickets can be purchased from the Public Transport counters in the Arrival Halls of T1 and T2 (between 7am – 10pm) or from the ticket vending machines at the bus stops (cash required). For transport fares, see www.dpp.cz/en/fares-in-prague/

Airport Express

The Airport Express provides bus transfers between Terminals 1 and 2. The Airport Express also takes travellers to the Prague Main Railway Station.

Public Shuttle Bus

Cedaz operates a daily public shuttle bus service from Prague Airport to Náměstí Republiky in the centre of Prague. Service frequency is every 30 minutes and they operate from 7:30am to 7:00pm. For fares and timetable see their website www.cedaz.cz.

Private Transfers

If you are travelling with large cases, it may be more convenient to arrange a private transfer to take you directly to your Prague hotel. The private transfer gives you the comfort of knowing that after you arrive at Prague Airport, your transport will be there to deliver you and your luggage straight to your accommodation without any hassles. See here for arrival and departure transfers.

Prague Airport Taxi

There is a taxi rank at the Arrival Hall of Terminal 1 and 2. Be sure to use the official taxis as the fares are regulated and based on mileage travelled. Most of the taxi drivers speak very little English so it would be useful to have your hotel or accommodation address written on a piece of paper.

Spanish Synagogue - Jewish Museum

The Spanish Synagogue (Španelská Synagoga) in Prague sits on a site that was previously the Old Shul, the oldest Jewish temple in Prague (circa 12th century). When the Jews were expelled from Spain during the reign of the Catholic monarchs, one group found shelter in Prague. The Old Shul was given to them as a place of worship and from that time on, it was also called the Spanish Synagogue.

<script type="text/javascript"

In 1868, the Old Shul was demolished and replaced with a neo-Moorish building whose architectural style is a reminder of the golden age of Jewish culture in Spain. The new synagogue was equipped with the latest technology of that time, with an emphasis on good acoustics as temple music and singing were held here frequently. František Škroup, the composer of the Czech national anthem, served as organist here between 1836-45.

The new Spanish Synagogue has a central, square floor plan which is bounded on three sides by raised galleries which open onto the main nave. Its interior walls, doors and gallery balustrades are richly decorated with elaborate Moorish polychrome, gilded motifs and stained glass. Although the interiors were restored in the 1950s, the building had to be closed in 1979 due to structural problems. It was after a long delay of almost 20 years before the reconstruction was carried out and the building re-opened.

Jewish Museum in Prague

Today the Spanish Synagogue is one of the six locations for the Jewish Museum (Židovské muzeum v Praze), the most visited museum in the Czech Republic. The Museum has one of the most extensive collections of Jewish art in the world and artefacts and books which tell of the life and history of Jews in the region. If you are interested in learning more about the Jewish quarter and Prague’s Jewish history, there is a Walking Tour of Jewish Prague that you can join which includes entry to the Jewish Museum.

Music at the Spanish Synagogue

With its long history of hosting music, the Spanish Synagogue also offers a diverse programme of classical and contemporary music. With its stunning golden interiors and good acoustics, the synagogue is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy some concerts in Prague. See what’s on at the Spanish Synagogue Here.

Plzenský Prazdroj is a beer name that not many beer drinkers may recognize, but call it by its better known German name Pilsner Urquell and all of a sudden you’re feeling thirsty. Pilsner beer is one of the products that the Czech Republic is famous for and if you’re a great fan of Czech beer, as my other half is, a visit to Pilsen or Plzeň could be a thirst-quenching experience – Pilsen is home of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery.

The History of Beer in Pilsen

Although pilsner beer has been brewed in the town of Pilsen since it was founded in 1295, the Pilsner that is known around the world today is associated with the brand name of Pilsner Urquell. But whether you use the name Urquell (German) or Prazdroj (Czech), both these words have the same meaning – “original source”. Pilsner is the original and first pale lager beer in the world.

Since 1842, the Prazdroj Brewery has been brewing the golden Pilsner Urquell. But before this time, the general brew was a dark top-fermented beer which was of a poor quality. According to a legend, the Burghers of Pilsen gathered in the town square in 1838 and poured 36 barrels of beer into the drains as they had had enough of the poor quality of brews that were being passed as beer. They got together and built a new brewery and a young Bavarian brewer by the name of Josef Groll was given the task of producing a better quality beer.

A Beer Fit for a King

Pilsner Urquell

Groll produced a crisp golden brew that was bottom-fermented. Its colour and taste amazed the town folk and hence the Pilsen lager was born. According to another legend, when Emperor Franz Josef I, King of Bohemia, heard rumours of the new beer he travelled to Pilsen in search of it. After tasting Groll’s new brew, the Emperor swore never to drink any other beer except for the pure Pilsner from Pilsen, what an endorsement! I now begin to understand why my husband likes his Pilsner Urquell. This new golden lager was fit for an Emperor.

It seems that many of the pale lagers produced in the world today are based on the original Pilsen beer formula. Brewers the world over have tried in vain to imitate the unique taste of Pilsner Urquell and if you visit the brewery you can learn about the noble hop, the soft water and other secrets behind the making of this legendary lager!

A Tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery

There is a day tour from Prague that takes you to the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. On this factory visit you will learn about how the old dark pilsner was brewed and drunk in the past, in contrast to how it is brewed and drunk today. Of course no visit to the Pilsner Urquell Brewery is complete without a visit to its historic cellars to taste some of the pure Pilsner beer. And included in this tour is the cost of your lunch in the brewery’s restaurant Na Spilce. I should also mention that the Gambrinus Brewery is here as well – another nice Czech beer.

This day trip from Prague also includes a visit of the Nižbor Bohemia glass factory. Bohemian glassware is another of the Czech Republic’s popular products so in effect you will get to see two of Prague’s most famous exports on this tour.

One of Prague’s oldest and best preserved religious buildings within the Prague Castle complex is St George’s Basilica, Bazilika Sv. Jiří. Founded by Prince Vratislav I of Bohemia around 920, the Basilica is dedicated to St George and is the city’s most important Romanesque landmark.

St. George’s Basilica

St. George’s Basilica ranks among the great monuments of Romanesque architecture in Bohemia. When the neighbouring St George’s Abbey was founded in 973, the Basilica was expanded to include the Abbey. Of the original 920 structure, only the foundations have been preserved. When a major fire destroyed the building in 1142, the reconstructed church took on a Romanesque appearance. The Baroque facade that we see today dates from the 17th century.

The remains of Duchess Ludmila, Bohemia’s first martyr, were placed here in 925. In the first half of the 13th century, the St. Ludmila Chapel was added and her tomb placed there. Until 1055, the Basilica was the official resting place for the House of Premyslid. Several Czech princes of the Premyslid dynasty, including Prince Vratislav, are buried in the Basilica and their tombs can be seen in the main nave.

Adam and Eve Tower

Towering above the Basilica are the massive twin marlstone towers. The narrower tower to the north was once called Eve and the wider, southern tower Adam.

The church portal on Jirská Street was built around 1520. Its tympanum shows St George fighting a dragon. Below this are the sandstone statues of Vratislaus I, the founder of the church, and Blessed Mlada, the founder of the Abbey.

In the 17th century, the western side of the church was adapted in the Early Baroque style and acquired its brick-red façade. The Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was added between 1718-1722 upon the martyr’s beatification. A statue of St John of Nepomuk with angels is on the façade.

St. George’s Basilica now serves as a concert hall for classical music concerts. See what’s on at St George’s Basilica and you can also book your Prague concert tickets Here.

One of the first stops that most tourists make on their visit to Prague is to see the Astronomical Clock or Prague Orloj in the Old Town Square. This grand old Prague clock was installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world. According to a local legend, ill fate will befall the city if the clock is neglected. Is it any wonder that after 600 years, the Astronomical Clock still ticks on!

The Prague Clock Does An Hourly Show

The Prague Astronomical Clock has an hourly performance, like the popular Glockenspeils in Germany. In the upper part of the astronomical clock, the 12 apostles appear every hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. doing The Walk of the Apostles.

The four figures that flank the clock are also set in motion at the hour. These figures represent Vanity, Greed, Death and Pleasure, the four things that were despised during the period when the clock was made. Take a look at the figure on the left and you’ll see Vanity admiring himself in the mirror. Next to him is the stereotype figure of a Jew holding a bag of gold representing Greed. Moving to the right the skeletal figure of Death strikes the time on the hour. Next to Death is the Turk which represents pleasure and entertainment.

Astronomical Clock Features

Whilst visitors might find this little show entertaining, the Astronomical Clock itself has very complex mechanism and functions. The upper face has the Astronomical dial which includes four main moving parts: the Zodiac ring, an outer rotating ring, a Sun icon as well as a Moon icon which tells all kinds of times and positions of planets. For instance, the outer edge of the clock with the golden Schwabacher numerals indicate the Old Czech Time. The next set of golden Roman numbers next to the Schwabacher numerals are the timescale of a normal 24 hour day and indicate time in local Prague time. Then there’s the zodiac ring whic indicates the location of the Sun on the ecliptic, etc.

The lower face of the Astronomical Clock has a Calendar which was added in 1870.

There is an ancient belief that the Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock are sites with magical powers, and the magic of the Astronomical Clock continues to cast a spell on the millions of tourists who come to see this clock each year.

Municipal House - Prague

Located in the centre of Prague is the art nouveau Municipal House (Obecni Dûm Praha), one of the city’s national cultural landmarks. Whilst this multifunctional building is a venue for conferences, congresses, concerts, balls and other events, it is also an important building in terms of Prague’s architectural and political history. Some of the most important Czech painters and sculptors were involved in the decoration of this building.

Municipal House

The Municipal House stands on land that was previously occupied by the King’s Court, the residence of King Wenceslas IV. It was built as a civic centre from 1905 and 1912 and the building is a mixture of several architectural and decorative styles and a range of materials were used.

<script type="text/javascript"

The eye-catching main facade of the Municipal House features a large ceramic half-dome mosaic above the entrance by Karel Špillar, titled Homage to Prague. Other allegorical groups of sculptures depict Nationalist themes like the Degradation of the People and the Resurection of the People, created by some of the leading artists of the time.

The interior is just as decorated, with many outstanding features and artwork. There is a large art gallery in the Municipal House and its halls and lounges host hundreds of events each year, including conventions, social and cultural events, concerts, exhibitions and balls.

For anyone interested in seeing art nouveau in Prague, the Municipal House can be visited by joining one of their many guided tours. The tour route covers the Smetana Hall – Confectionery – Moravian Slovak Parlour – Božena – Nemcová Parlour – Oriental Parlour – Grégr Hall – Palacký Hall – Mayor’s Hall – Riegr Hall – Sladkovský Hall – Wine Bar – and the American Bar.

The Smetana Hall

The concert halls of the Municipal House are some of Prague’s most impressive due to their superior acoustics. In particular, the Smetana Hall on the first floor, with its original organ from the high art nouveau period, is the most famous concert hall in the Municipal House. A huge range of musical events take place here, from pop to jazz and the best of classical concerts. It seats 1,200 guests and is the venue for Prague’s Spring festival, Summer concerts and Autumn festivals.
