When to travel to Estonia: weather and seasons

Weather in Estonia

Despite its northern latitude, Estonia's climate, although on the cool side of temperate, is relatively mild because of its proximity to water. However, on occasion summers can be warm and winters severe.

Estonia's proximity to the Baltic Sea and the Gulfs of Riga and Finland keeps the climate moderate in most parts though temperatures are more extreme in the interior.

The country's temperate and humid climate differs sharply from the climates of regions to the east (in Russia) at the same latitude. As mentioned earlier, the climate is on the cool and damp side of temperate, verging on continental as you move inland where, in winter, it can be a few degrees colder than the coast or, in summer, a few degrees warmer.

Estonia's northern and western coastal areas tend to be milder than the country's inland regions, while the eastern and southeastern regions tend to have a continental climate. A northern city, the capital Tallinn does have cold winters but the sea has a moderating effect on temperatures.

In general, the best time to visit is May through September, when daytime temperatures average 20-25°C (in the 70s°F), with nights ranging 4-15°C (40-60°F).

The coldest months are January and February, when temperatures are -7 to -1°C (in the 20s°F), although they can drop to -29°C (-20°F). Rain often comes in July, the hottest month when mid-summer temperatures can reach up to 30°C.
