Frankfurt’s Kleinemarkthalle is a melting pot of international specialities:
The last time we were in Frankfurt, we stumbled upon the Kleinemarkthalle and were very glad to find this inner city market full of gourmet food. We had some delicious cheese, nice breads, olives and dips and were so delighted to find the kinds of food that warm our hearts.
With the Frankfurt Christmas market visits very much on our minds, we had totally forgotten about this market. Luckily, as we were exploring the side streets of Frankfurt’s famous shopping mile, “the Zeil“, we again stumbled upon the Kleinemarkthalle. In writing this post, I now have a record of this place. Hopefully, we’ll be a bit more organized next time around and arrange time for a meal here.
Kleinemarkthalle is a covered market hall with over 60 stalls selling all kinds of fresh produce, breads, cheeses, spices, flowers, coffee, etc, including a superb range of international delicacies.
Being the Christmas season, the market stalls were bursting with Christmas biscuits and cakes, as well as plants and decorations. Frankfurt’s famous “Green Sauce” is available at this market, but this is something I’ve yet to try.
Although we were not there to buy anything, it was enjoyable to see the quality seasonal foods. It was also nice seeing a stallholder serving his customer in the old-fashion way. With a rattan basket, he went about selecting a range of fruit and vegetables for a businessman who looked like he was given a shopping list by his wife.
Cafés and Restaurants
On the upper floor of the Kleinemarkthalle are more stalls and a few cafés where you can enjoy a drink or a meal.
As it was lunchtime, businessmen were enjoying their freshly cooked pastas and other meals at the Italian café. The café that attracted us most was Franco’s Austernbar where you can enjoy oysters and freshly cooked seafood. The seafood comes from Franco’s fish stall next to the café.
The Kleinemarkthalle is close to the well-known Frankfurt shopping mile ‘Zeil’, between Hasengasse and Liebfrauenberg. It is open from Monday to Saturday.
