Käthe Wohlfahrt Has All Kinds of Christmas Decorations for Your Christmas Tree and Home:
Heidelberg is packed with wonderful shops and anyone walking along the Hauptstrasse and its side streets will discover this very quickly. One of the shops that is very popular with ladies and children is Käthe Wohlfahrt which specializes in Christmas decorations.
World Famous Christmas Shop
Käthe Wohlfahrt started in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but these days you’ll find branches of this world famous Christmas shop in cities like Bamberg, Berlin, Nuremberg, Rudesheim and Oberammergau. There’s even a Christmas shop in the Alsace town of Riquewihr in France and Bruges in Belgium. In Heidelberg, the Käthe Wohlfahrt store is at the intersection of Hauptstrasse and Grabengasse near the Universitätsplatz.
At Christmas time, Käthe Wohlfahrt also operates stands in the main German Christmas markets and in the big German shopping malls.
Year-round Christmas Store
The Germans are famous for their Christmas markets and traditions, but it doesn’t have to be the Christmas season to enjoy a visit to Käthe Wohlfahrt. Even in the heat of summer, you will get drawn into the Christmas spirit when you step into the store.
Käthe Wohlfahrt has everything you’ll need to decorate your home and table for Christmas.
From ornaments and angels for your Christmas tree to cuckoo clocks, candle holders, wooden nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids and music boxes and other accessories to create your Christmas scenes. Most of these products are made in Käthe Wohlfahrt’s Christmas Workshop in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and each year they come out with new lines of products to help you decorate your home for the Christmas spirit. You can also buy Christmas gifts and seasonal treats in the store.
I walked through the Heidelberg store determined not to be tempted by all the Christmas decorations, but when I got to the rear of the store with its beautiful winter wonderland setting, it almost felt like the Christmas season was here. And yes, I did come away with a little something from the store.
We were given a voucher for a 3% discount which is nothing really, but remember that if you are a non-EU resident, you can claim a VAT refund if your purchase from the store exceeds a certain amount – currently about €25 in Germany. VAT in many European cities are currently at 19% (2013) and more so it is worthwhile claiming your tax refund if you’ve done a bit of shopping. And if you’re running low on Euros, don’t worry, there’s an ATM conveniently located opposite the store.
For those not planning to travel to Germany in the near future, you can still buy Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas decorations from their Christmas shop online.
