Schloss Bensberg Is One of the Largest Baroque Palaces in Europe:
Located in the city of Bergisch Gladbach, high above the Bay of Cologne is Schloss Bensberg (Bensberg Palace), one the largest Baroque palaces in Europe today.
History of Schloss Bensberg
Schloss Bensberg was commissioned by Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, for his second wife Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, from the House of Medici.
Built between 1705-1711, Bensberg Palace served as a hunting lodge and summer residence, and its grand architecture is said to have been inspired by no less than the Palace of Versailles. Even the German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe was impressed by the considerable proportions of this building in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Schloss Bensberg’s elevated position looks over the Rhine River, the Rhine Valley, the Bay of Cologne and with views as far as Cologne Cathedral. Anna Maria Luisa enjoyed the elevated scenery and she lived in this palace until her husband’s death in 1716 when she returned to Florence.
