The Romantik Hotel Tuchmacher in Görlitz – charming and romantic:
For our Görlitz visit, we stayed at the Romantik Hotel Tuchmacher, in the historic centre. I was tempted to book the Hotel Börse as the entire film crew for The Grand Budapest Hotel movie had stayed there. However, I was glad that I followed my instincts and booked the Romantik Hotel Tuchmacher instead. The USP for the Romantik Hotel group is “tradition, history, quality and cordial hospitality” and the Romantik Hotel Tuchmacher did not disappoint.
Had we stayed at the Hotel Börse, we would have been caught up in the middle of football fever. The UEFA Euro Cup was on and the cafés and bars on the Untermarkt had their televisions blasting. With Germany playing Italy, the tension was intense and the football-crazed Germans were cheering and shouting throughout the evening.
First Impression
The Romantik Hotel Tuchmacher is a family-run 4-star hotel located just two minutes walk from the Untermarkt (Görlitz main square). The hotel is in a restored 16th century Renaissance building featuring a blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture. In 1998, the four adjacent patrician houses were converted and became part of the hotel. Altogether there are 60 rooms and suites.
There are four categories of rooms ranging from Standard to a Suite and they’re all individually decorated. Check-in was efficient and we took an instant liking to our spacious room.
Rooms
Our Comfort Double Room (room 218) was spacious and very comfortable. There was plenty of room for our cases … and us. We really felt that we could stretch out in the room. The modern bathroom was smart and had good collateral. There was no tea-making facilities in the room, but that was not a problem for us as I came prepared with my own travel kettle. Our room looked out into the courtyard where the Tuchmacher Hof restaurant is. More importantly, room 218 was accessible by elevator, which was convenient as we had large cases.
Dining
Breakfast is served in the Farber Stube. The hotel’s other two restaurants are the courtyard Tuchmacher Hof and the more formal Schneider Stube. We dined at the Schneider Stube one evening and enjoyed its elegant atmosphere. The restaurant serves specialities from Saxony and Silesia. Being Germany, the menu is weighted towards meat, but they do have some vegetarian dishes. Luckily there was a Truffle ravioli that we both fancied. The dish was fine, but I would have preferred a little more truffle and less cream.
What we particularly liked:
- Being part of the Romantik Hotel chain, the hotel is charming and full of character
- The room is spacious and we didn’t have to fight our luggage for floor space
- The hotel is just 2 minutes walk from the Untermarkt
- Being in the historical centre, we could walk everywhere and even across to Poland
- The price was reasonable
- Friendly staff. The front desk manager even took us on a little tour of the hotel
What we were not keen on:
The WiFi signal in our room was not great. Although the manager tried rebooting the network, it didn’t seem to improve it. He suggested that we work in the office area where the signals were much stronger.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Tuchmacher and will happily stay here again.
