When to travel to the Netherlands and Amsterdam: weather and seasonsThe Netherlands has a fairly temperate climate, very similar to England; temperatures are variable and rain occurs throughout the year. With cool summers and mild winters the Netherlands' mild, maritime climate averages about 19°C (66°F) in July and 2°C (36°F) in January. Southerly and westerly winds predominate, and the sea moderates the climate through onshore breezes and the effect of the Gulf Stream. The Netherlands has extremely flat topography, and since the country has no mountains to block the winds, there is no great difference of climate from region to region. Summers are generally warm with changeable periods, but very hot weather is rare. The Netherlands can be beautiful in summer, with bright sunny days and temperatures averaging a pleasant 25°, perfect weather for canal side strolls, or exploring the countryside by bike – especially as the landscape is quite flat! But keep an eye out for rain clouds. The coastal areas have changeable, windy weather although this lessens the more you go inland. If you're going to the Netherlands you'll need a European style of clothing, i.e. light to medium weights in the warmer months and medium to heavy weights in winter.
