Espace Dalí has the largest collection of Dalí sculptures in France:
Fans of Dalí will not want to miss a visit to Espace Dalí in Montmartre. In this small, but very well presented gallery is a magnificent collection of Dalí’s most important works including sculptures, lithographs, illustrations, engravings and other mediums. This permanent exhibition is the most unique in France and is dedicated to the surrealistic world of this Catalan Master.
Espace Dalí
Espace Dalí has the largest collection of Dalí sculptures in France and there are some 300 of his original artwork here. From the ticket office you descend a set of steps and from the moment you step into the gallery you’ll be exposed to a visual spectacle of famous Dali sculptures like Nobility of Time, Profile of Time, Alice in Wonderland, the Space Elephant and more. The sculptures are not encased in glass or perspex and you can actually get up close to admire and examine the features of each piece of work and read about Dalí’s insights of the world and his surrealistic interpretation through his art.
Dalí’s View of Art
Dalí was of the view that art should permeate all aspects of life and in addition to sculptures, his creativity manifests itself in furniture and glass design, fashion, book illustrations, the cinema and advertising. In Dalí the
designer, we get to see the famous Mae West sofa and his surrealistic ideal is also expressed through other pieces of everyday household furniture. Dalí believed that every portrait could be translated into a living room furniture, so it’s mind-boggling when you think of the potential amount of work that he could have created with just this one line of thought.
As you make your way out of the gallery you’ll come across a small chapel where a film recording shows Dalí doing different things in Montmartre. Dalí and his fellow artists used to worship at this chapel. Then just before you exit the building there is a giftshop as well as the Espace Dalí Gallery where, if you have some spare change, you can buy limited edition Dalí sculptures and engravings.
I loved Espace Dalí for its quiet venue and you can take your time in learning more about the master and immerse yourself in his thoughts and creations. Even the group of school kids who were there at the time were absorbed in their Dalí lessons and not a squeak came from them. If you are a fan of Dalí, the Espace Dalí is not to be missed and even if you have the slightest curiosity about Dalí and his world of surrealism, the place is well worth a visit.
You can see more Dalí photos at our Espace Dalí album Here.
The museum is open all year round from 10:00 to 18:00 (up till 20:00 in July and August).
Ticket Price: Adults 11€, Seniors 7€, Children and Students 6€, Free for Paris Pass holders
Tip: If you have the Paris Pass (which comprises the Paris Attractions Pass, the Paris Museum Pass and Paris Visite/Metro Pass) be aware that the Espace Dalí is included in your Paris Attractions Pass and not the Paris Museum Pass. Each of these passes can be used independent of the other and we had incorrectly assumed that the Espace Dalí was a museum attraction – see our post on how to make the best use of your Paris Pass. By the time we visited Espace Dali our Paris Attractions Pass had already expired, and even though our Museum Pass was still valid, we had to pay the entry fee again. But because we had the Paris Visite ticket, they gave us a discount on the entry fee. In spite of having to pay again, it was certainly worth the money.
