How to get to St. Mark's Square : Venice Guide

Let's face it, at some stage every visitor to Venice wants to get to Piazza San Marco, St. Mark's Square, and the truth is that there are little signposts to it from just about everywhere. Unfortunately, Venetian street directions can leave something to be desired, especially if you're just visiting. In a couple of places you can find signs to San Marco facing in diametrically opposite directions! No doubt you can take either route, but it would be nice to know which was quicker. And in other places you seem to be getting along fine until the signs seem to vanish completely!

Anyway, here are some general directions to help you get to St Mark's Square from various locations around Venice and the Lagoon using public transport:

How to get to Piazza San Marco:

From the Airport
By motorboat - about 1 hour. A water-taxi is faster but expensive. See our "Arriving by Plane" page for more information

From Piazzale Roma
By vaporetto no. 1 it takes about 40 minutes, no. 52 (direct), about 20 minutes, and no. 82 (direct), about 30 minutes. Vaporettos run at intervals of every 10-12 minutes.
Walking will take approximately 30-45 minutes, provided you don't get lost!

From Santa Lucia Railway Station
By vaporetto no. 1 about 35 minutes, no. 52 (direct), about 25 minutes, and no. 82 (direct), about 25 minutes. Vaporettos leave at intervals of every 10-12 minutes. If you prefer to walk it will take you about 30-45 minutes.

From Accademia
By vaporetto no. 1 about 10 minutes, and no. 82 (direct), about 5 minutes. Vaporettos leave at intervals of every 10-12 minutes. Walking will take you about 10 minutes.

From the Frari Church (Santa Maria Gloriosa del Frari, San Polo)
By vaporetto (from the boat stop of S.Tomà, a couple of minutes on foot from the Frari Chuch) no. 1 about 15 minutes, and no. 82 (direct), about 10 minutes. Vaporettos leave at intervals of every 10-12 minutes. If you prefer to walk it will take you about 30 minutes.

From the Salute Church (Santa Maria della Salute, Dorsoduro)
By vaporetto no. 1 about 3 minutes. Departure at intervals of every 10 minutes. It you want to walk you must cross the Accademia Bridge to get onto the San Marco side of the Grand Canal. This route will take you about 15 minutes. There is also a Traghetto not far from the Salute Church which will let you off in Campo S.Maria del Giglio. From here it is about a 5 minute walk to Piazza San Marco.

From the Zattere
By vaporetto no. 52 about 10 minutes, no. 82, about 15 minutes. Vaporettos leave at intervals of every 10-12 minutes. If you prefer to walk it will take you about 20 minutes and you must cross the Accademia Bridge.


From Further Afield:

From the Lido
Line no. 1 and no. 52 leave from the St. Maria Elisabetta boat stop every 10-12 minutes. There is also a two-tiered "motonave" or large passenger ferry boat which takes about 15-20 minutes to reach Piazza San Marco from the Lido.

From Murano
By vaporetto no. 52 it takes about 35 minutes, with departures every 10 minutes, with and no. 23, about 30 minutes, departures every 20 minutes.

From Burano and Torcello
By vaporetto no. 12 or no. 14 it takes about 65 minutes. Vaporettos leave every 30 minutes.

From Punta Sabbioni
By vaporetto no. 12 or no. 14 it takes about 40 minutes. Boats go every 30 minutes.
