Eyewitness Travel Guide to Swden (May 2005)

This is the Eyewitness guide on Sweden, and it's NOT limited to Stockholm, although there's a good chapter on it!

"This guide is the best I've found. Descriptions are very clear. Myriad photos and illustrations give a real advance tour of the country. Maps are excellent. The transportation section clarifies potentially confusing directions for trains, roads, ferries. There's an excellent word list (with pronunciation) in back of the book. Outlined by provinces, it's easy to tell the sort of towns one might want to visit. Our time will be limited, so we will need to plan our trip to Sweden carefully. This book is a big help."

Eyewitness Travel Guide to Stockholm (Jan 2007)

This is used to be the only Eyewitness guide on Sweden, and it's limited to Stockholm. Few tours spend a long enough period there to make this indispensable, but it's good at what it does.

"Over 650 full-color photographs, taken especially for this guide, show you Stockholm at its best. Floor plans and 3D cutaways help you explore local buildings... Detailed and accurate Street Finder maps give you instant access to each district. The Survival Guide shows you, in pictures, how to use local currency, public transportation, and telephones. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, and bars in all price ranges."

Lonely Planet Sweden (Sweden, 2nd Ed 2003)

I haven't used this but it looks OK, although aimed at the backpacker market. "From bars and cafes hidden down Stockholm's cobbled lanes to snow-capped forests sparkling under the midnight sun... Insider tips on exploring Stockholm, accommodation options from five-star urban luxury to camping in the wilderness; smörgåbords and schnapps: the best eateries and nightlife revealed; ski in Lappland, cycle on Gotland – activities for every season
includes practical, user-friendly Swedish language chapter with 57 detailed maps".

Lonely Planet Scandinavian Europe (Scandinavian Europe,8th Ed)

"Written by an opinionated team of eight savvy writers. The only guide with in-depth coverage of Iceland and the Faroes, plus information on Tallinn and St Petersburg. Filled with feedback from travellers and tips from locals."

As it's basically designed for budget travellers (still expensive in Scandinavia!), there's a bit of wastage for those on tours or travelling a step up, but I still think it's worth taking, especially for the handy maps.
