A fine gabled house in Miltenberg
Today we visited two charming towns which are known for their beautiful wooden framed houses. Good photo opportunities. Miltenberg's cultural wealth and affluence are reflected in its beautiful mediaeval and Renaissance architecture. Gasthaus Zum Riesen at no. 97 Hauptstrasse is Germany's oldest inn, offering traditional food and a range of specialty beers.
Don't just stay in the town in Wertheim, head up the hill to the castle, there's a great view and a cafe/bar overlooking the town. It's also very pleasant to take a stroll through the town hall rose garden, across the bridge and along the river.
Both these towns thrived on their income from river traffic. That's still true, but nowadays it's tourists rather than traders who bring in the cash!
Tins of Vanilla Kipferl biscuitsTonight's onboard entertainment included a "Vanilla Kipferl" demonstration. This biscuit is a typical local German speciality and resembles shortbread. Our guest chef was aided by two passengers and it was quite hilarious.
In the newsletter, you're warned that tonight the boat passes through about 7 locks and to expect 'possible disturbance'. It does rumble and will wake you, so earplugs are recommended. Some fortunate ones, like Tony, sleep through anything! |
