The Amsterdam to Budapest River Cruise (Rhine-Main-Danube)

Day 8: Nuremberg and the Continental Divide

Previous page: Bamberg

DAY 8 Nuremberg-Continental Divide. (Sun.) Enjoy a guided morning tour of this historic city. See the storybook 900-year-old ramparts, the Imperial Castle and the Justice Palace where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946. Later today arrive at the highest point of your cruise -1,332 feet above sea level - before descending again through stair-step locks. (FB,L,D)

The City tour of Nuremberg was another early morning start. When we arrived at the Zeppelin Field, we were disappointed that the area had been cordoned off for rally of a different kind - there was a motorbike race on later in the day and all we could do was drive around the area. The visit to the Justice Palace was spine-chilling as our guide recounted stories of Nazi attrocities... temperature-wise, it was a cool morning too.

The World Cup is coming!

We then went into the town square where a giant soccer ball stood out like a sore thumb against the historical backdrop. For soccer crazed fans, Nuremberg is one of the 12 host cities in Germany for FIFA World Cup 2006 and we hope that this beautiful town square does not suffer from soccer hooliganism. In the town square you'll also see the Gingerbread (Lebkuchen) shop dating back to 1610. Gingerbread has been produced in Nuremberg for over 600 years (click here for Gingerbread history and recipe).

This afternoon, onboard actvities include a lecture on locks by a guest speaker. We go through 68 locks on this cruise and this section contained the biggest and most interesting ones. Seeing the road pass under your boat as you cruise down the canal is quite an experience! At approximately 6.00 p.m. we passed over the Continental Divide so everyone was on the sundeck taking snaps.
