Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – Sofia, Bulgaria

This massive, awe-inspiring church is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a symbol not just of Sofia but of Bulgaria itself and naturally is a top tourist attraction. The cathedral was built between 1904 and 1912 to honour the Russian Tsar Alexander II and the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died during the Russo- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - Interior view Turkish War of 1877-1878, which resulted in Bulgaria being liberated from Ottoman rule. It was also named after St. Alexander Nevsky, the patron saint of the Tsar and his family.

The main entrance is laid with marble with mosaics above the doorways and the domes are laden with 8 kgs of gold. The interior is stunning and richly decorated with the best material imported from overseas. Check out the high painted ceilings, stained glass windows, mosaic floor, and marble and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Sofia woodcarvings covering the walls.

Inside the Aleksander Nevski Crypt, also known as the Museum of Icons, are displays of Bulgaria’s biggest and best collection of religious icons.
