Rugby union fans and dedicated followers of the RBS Six Nations Championship can start planning their travels as the Six Nations Fixtures for 2012 are available.

What is the Six Nations?

Six Nations is an annual rugby tournament that pits the best players from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France and Italy against each other. The event is currently sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, hence RBS 6 Nations.

The championship originated in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship, the first international rugby union tournament in the Northern Hemisphere. France joined the competition in 1910 and Italy followed in 2000.

The Municipality of Rome has introduced a new room tax that is effective from January 1, 2011. Visitors to Rome will now have to pay a new tax, which is to be collected by the hotel or property, and which is based on a per person, per night basis.

The charges, per person per night, are as follows:

• 4* and 5* hotels – €3
• 1*, 2* and 3* hotels – €2
• Others (B&Bs, holiday apartments, etc.) – €2

So if you book a 4-star room for two people for 3 nights, your new tax will be €18.

The tax will apply for the first 10 nights’ stay and does not apply to children under 10 years of age.

Travellers should be aware that this is a government impost, so don’t take it out on the hoteliers, many of whom are not pleased with the tax.

The U.K. is another destination where a VAT increase in the New Year will impact on travel costs.  The U.K. VAT increases from 17.5% to 20% with effect from January 4, 2011.

Wow, what a weekend June 21st was – the Summer Solstice, Father’s day, the British F1 races and lots of summer festivals all over Europe. Thank goodness that weekend is over.

And now to get ready for the next big weekend on July 4th – Independence Day for our American friends, the Tour de France starts off from Monaco and grand finals at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon is currently on in London and summertime is always a nice time for that holiday in England.  So anyone from the Continent wishing to watch the grand final of Le Tenis on July 5, you’re lucky to be able to hop on the Eurostar to get into London in no time.

For me, the next most exciting sporting event coming up is Le Tour de France.  Less than two weeks to go before these amazing champion cyclists punish their bodies on this most gruelling of cycling races.  For us couch-potatoes, watching the mountain climb on television is painful enough. 

The Tour de France has captured the imagination of many non-cyclists like myself and I’m sure lots of people are eagerly awaiting the start of the race.  Londoners wanting to watch the winners ride up the Champs-Elysee, I hope you’ve already got your Eurostar  tickets and Paris hotel booked.
