Like Dresden, Wurzburg suffered massive destruction during WWII but has managed to rebuild itself to <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/14208-2\/DSC_3556.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"St. Killian\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"St. Killian\" \/>become an important commercial, historical and cultural centre for Lower Franconia.\u00a0\u00a0Its main university is one of the oldest in Germany and hence its attraction for students. In fact, students make up some 20% of W\u00fcrzburg&#8217;s population of 130,000.\u00a0 One of the first bits of interesting trivia you&#8217;ll pick up is that Wurzburg University is where W.C. Rontgen discovered x-ray.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure everyone&#8217;s had some x-rays taken at some stage in their lives so thank you Mr. Rontgen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"giDescription\">A visit to the impressive Residenz is a must as is the Fortress Marienberg.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/14142-2\/IMG_5773.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Residenz\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Residenz\" \/>\u00a0 The <em>Residenz<\/em> is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage site, but unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside the building.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Residenz has the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wga.hu\/frames-e.html?\/html\/t\/tiepolo\/gianbatt\/5wurzbur\/index.html\">world\u2019s biggest unsupported ceiling fresco<\/a>, painted by <em>Giovanni Battista Tiepolo<\/em>. Our guide&#8217;s explanation of Tiepolo&#8217;s representations of the four continents was fascinating. I wish we had more time to absorb his interesting portrayal of the continents as ladies: Lady Asia, Lady Africa, Lady America and Lady Europe.
