{"id":111,"date":"2007-07-23T23:55:25","date_gmt":"2007-07-23T13:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=111"},"modified":"2007-07-23T23:55:25","modified_gmt":"2007-07-23T13:55:25","slug":"melk-monastery-european-river-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/european-river-cruise\/melk-monastery-european-river-cruise","title":{"rendered":"Melk Monastery &#8211; European River Cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>When our boat arrived at Melk shortly after breakfast, we were transferred by coach to Melk Monastery.\u00a0 As the coach crossed a small bridge to get onto the main road, we could see this beautiful monastery up on the hill.\u00a0\u00a0Whether it was the fogginess of\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/4792-2\/DSC_0523.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Melk Monastery\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Melk Monastery\" \/>mind early in the morning, or excitement at seeing the monastery, we didn&#8217;t pay too much attention to where the boat was moored as it didn&#8217;t seem to be too far from where we spotted the monastery.\u00a0\u00a0 Tony and I got lost finding our way back and so did others &#8211;\u00a0and one couple very nearly missed the boat.\u00a0 We all followed the sign to the port, but that&#8217;s not where the boat was moored.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/4460-2\/IMG_6199.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Garden pavilion - Melk Monastery\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Garden pavilion - Melk Monastery\" \/>When we arrived at the monastery, we spent some time in the garden and its small palace next to the entrance &#8211; not to be missed.\u00a0 The baroque garden pavilion has famous frescoes by Johan Wenzel Bergl and some of the scenes are rather <em>interesting<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Abbey itself contains extensive exhibition rooms, containing all manner of sacred and profane objects imaginatively displayed.\u00a0 One of my favorite pieces of art work was J\u00f6rg Breu&#8217;s winged altar with the cross by Arnulf Rainer.\u00a0 <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/4572-2\/DSC_0445.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Jorg Breu's winged altar\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Jorg Breu's winged altar\" \/>After the <em>Church<\/em>, the <em>Library<\/em> is the second most important room, holding some 100,000 books, including impressive manuscripts from before 15th C. to modern works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Abbey visit takes time, and afterwards you can make your own way back to the\u00a0boat through <em>Melk village<\/em>.
