of York has retained many of its medieval structures and ancient timbered houses such as the Shambles are protected by conservation orders, thus benefiting <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9011-2\/GB_0204.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Shambles\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Shambles\" \/>tourists like ourselves.\u00a0 Cars are banned from the city centre,\u00a0which makes this is a great place for walking.\u00a0 As the plaque in the street explains, &#8220;The Shambles is the ancient street of the Butchers of York mentioned in the Doomesday Book of William the Conqueror.\u00a0 It takes its name from the word &#8216;Shamel&#8217; meaning the stalls or benches on which the meat was displayed &#8211; later versions of which can still be seen.\u00a0 It was rebuilt about 1400 when <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9031-2\/GB_0218.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"York Minster\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"York Minster\" \/>it resumed its present character.&#8221;\u00a0 There are lots to see in this town and as we\u00a0only had limited time, we walked very quickly all over the place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0seeing\u00a0the crooked houses of the \u2018Shambles\u2019\u00a0we reached York Minster, England\u2019s largest medieval cathedral,\u00a0and also said to be the largest Gothic church north of the Alps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the fascinating things you&#8217;ll notice in this town is the usual street names and stone sculptures that decorate the street <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9065-2\/GB_0236.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Stonegate\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Stonegate\" \/>corners.\u00a0 Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate is York&#8217;s tiniest street with the longest name.\u00a0 The name dates from Saxon times and means &#8220;neither one thing nor the other&#8221;.\u00a0 Then there is\u00a0Stonegate\u00a0with the medieval red devil which stands guard over the street.<\/p>\n<p>It is said that York has a pub for every night of the year
