can crawl.\u00a0 In the past, <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17739-2\/UK_0369.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Duke Hotel\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Duke Hotel\" \/>there were some 3,000 pubs in Dublin where locals could have a cheap drink and escape from their\u00a0dire poverty.\u00a0 The pubs provided a cosy atmosphere where the men could have a drink and forget the hardship of life outside the pubs.\u00a0Today Dublin has about 850 pubs with particular styles and clientele.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17741-2\/UK_0372.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Davy Byrnes\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Davy Byrnes\" \/>However, for a pub crawl with a difference we participated in the Jameson\u00a0Dublin Literary Pub Crawl.\u00a0 As the people at Jameson say, &#8220;<em>Dublin pubs are known the world over as shrines to the art of conversation.\u00a0 The drink is almost something incidental&#8230;<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The censorship act of 1927, prevented may writers from publishing their work.\u00a0 Submitting to the church was not for <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17748-3\/UK_0377.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Literary Pub Crawl\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Literary Pub Crawl\" \/>them and therefore they had to escape to Europe.\u00a0 Those who stayed went to pubs like the Mulligan&#8217;s, Palace, McDaid and Bailey to meet the journalists and literary editors of the Irish Times and Irish Press.\u00a0 The scene was gossipy and poisonous and writers fell out\u00a0and had to move to another pub.\u00a0 Pub crawling became a way of life for them.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17733-2\/UK_0366.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Duke Hotel\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Duke Hotel\" \/>We started with a drink at the Duke Hotel, 9 Duke Street.\u00a0 Two actors then took us to four famous pubs to follow in the footsteps of Joyce, Shaw, O&#8217;Casey Beckett and other literary giants.\u00a0 The actors performed humorous extracts from Dublin&#8217;s best known writers at each stop.\u00a0 You got to have a drink at each pub, but you also had\u00a0to listen carefully as there was a Literary Quiz at the end.\u00a0 Prizes were then awarded to the quickest and most literary-inclined.\u00a0 Tony\u00a0took out the first prize during his Crawl and he&#8217;s
