{"id":145,"date":"2007-09-07T07:20:10","date_gmt":"2007-09-06T21:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=145"},"modified":"2007-09-07T07:20:10","modified_gmt":"2007-09-06T21:20:10","slug":"blarney-stone-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/britain-ireland\/blarney-stone-ireland","title":{"rendered":"Blarney Stone &#8211; Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>DAY 11 &#8211; Today we crossed the rugged Derrynasaggart Mountains to Blarney to visit its ancient castle which was built nearly six hundred <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17415-2\/DSC_0605.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Blarney Castle\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Blarney Castle\" \/>years ago by one of Ireland\u2019s greatest chieftains, Cormac MacCarthy.\u00a0 Most tourists however flock to Blarney Castle\u00a0in the hope that they will be blessed with the gift of the gab after kissing the famous Blarney Stone, the legendary Stone of Eloquence.\u00a0 To reach the stone we had to climb some 127 steps to the top.\u00a0 Although we were there early,\u00a0there was already a huge queue of visitors all waiting their turn to kiss the stone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17399-2\/DSC_0594.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Kissing the stone\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Kissing the stone\" \/>The stone is set in the wall below the castle battlement.\u00a0 It was quite an experience as you had to lie on your back and arch backwards and under the parapet to kiss the stone.\u00a0 An attendant, to whom you pay a fee, holds you by the feet as you arch over the side of the tower to ensure that you do not slip off the tower and go plunging down to the <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17403-2\/DSC_0597.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Parapet\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Parapet\" \/>ground.\u00a0 Many of the bigger built ladies had second thoughts and pulled out, while some of the more hygiene conscious stuck a piece of gladwrap on the spot so that they were not kissing someone else&#8217;s germs!\u00a0 A photographer takes a snap of you in action and by the time you get back on ground level, the pictures are available for sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17407-2\/DSC_0600.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Blarney Castle\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Blarney Castle\" \/>Whether you believe it or not,\u00a0many luminaries from Sir Walter Scott to a host of American presidents, world leaders, and international entertainers have been to the Stone to see if they can gain further advantage\u00a0from a kiss of the Blarney.\u00a0 Winston Churchill visited in 1912 and\u00a0kissed the Stone. It&#8217;s claimed that he became the greatest orator of the twentieth century!
