{"id":164,"date":"2007-10-16T22:51:25","date_gmt":"2007-10-16T12:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=164"},"modified":"2007-10-16T22:51:25","modified_gmt":"2007-10-16T12:51:25","slug":"blue-mosque-sultan-ahmet-mosque-istanbul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/turkey\/things-to-see-in-istanbul\/blue-mosque-sultan-ahmet-mosque-istanbul","title":{"rendered":"Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque) &#8211; Istanbul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453, a distinctive style of art and architecture developed which is now typically described as Ottoman.\u00a0 It reached its peak in the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent and the buildings now considered to be most typical of Ottoman styles include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Turkey\/Istanbul\/SultanAhmet\/DSC_0058.jpg.html\" title=\"Blue Mosque\">Blue Mosque<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Sultan Ahmet Mosque is commonly known as the Blue Mosque and when you enter the mosque, the blue and green tiled interior explains the name.\u00a0 Its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Turkey\/Istanbul\/SultanAhmet\/DSC_0056.jpg.html\" title=\"Cascading domes &amp; Minarets\">cascading domes <\/a>and six soaring minarets dominate the skyline of Istanbul and can be seen from a distance.\u00a0 The six minarets are an unusual feature as most mosques have four, two or one minaret.\u00a0 As the story goes, Sultan Ahmet instructed his architect to make gold (<em>altin<\/em>) minarets and this was believed to have been\u00a0misunderstood as six (<em>alti<\/em>) minarets.\u00a0 The original architect of the mosque met an unfortunate ending in that he was\u00a0literally fired, i.e. executed, although I&#8217;m not sure if there\u00a0was a link between the misunderstanding\u00a0 and the firing.\u00a0\u00a0Whatever the cause of the error, this caused quite a scandal, as the six minarets puts it on equal footing as <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/34901-2\/AJP_1900.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Dome ceiling of Blue Mosque\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Dome ceiling of Blue Mosque\" \/>the mosque in Mecca. The problem was ultimately solved by adding an\u00a0additional minaret to Mecca&#8217;s mosque.<\/p>\n<p>The interior high ceiling is lined with about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Turkey\/Istanbul\/BlueMosque\/DSC_0048.jpg.html\" title=\"Blue tiles of mosque\">20,000 blue tiles <\/a>giving the mosque its popular name. Fine examples of 16th-century Iznik design, the tiles feature flowers, trees and abstract patterns.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Mosque was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I\u00a0to rival\u00a0Hagia Sophia and took seven years to build.\u00a0 Construction\u00a0began<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/34907-2\/AJP_1901.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Preparation for Ramadan - Blue Mosque Istanbul\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Preparation for Ramadan - Blue Mosque Istanbul\" \/> in 1609 and\u00a0Sultan Ahmet died only a year after the completion of his masterpiece, at the age of 27.
