height: 85px\" title=\"Entrance to Acropolis, Athens\" \/><\/a>ancient buildings with most of the artifacts from the temples being housed in the Acropolis museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0038.jpg.html\" title=\"Theatre of Dionysus, Acropolis, Athens\"><\/a>On the Acropolis are the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and Propylaea and\u00a0on the south slope\u00a0are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0038.jpg.html\" title=\"Theatre of Dionysus, Acropolis, Athens\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16049-2\/athens_0038.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Temple of Dionysus, Acropolis, Athens\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Temple of Dionysus, Acropolis, Athens\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0038.jpg.html\" title=\"Theatre of Dionysus, Acropolis, Athens\">Dionysus Theatre<\/a>, one of the oldest theatres built in the 4th century BC and the very beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0021.jpg.html\" title=\"Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens\">Odeon of Herodes Atticus <\/a>which was built by the Roman ruler Herodes Atticus in the 2nd <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0021.jpg.html\" title=\"Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens\"><\/a>century AD.\u00a0 The Dionysus hosted plays like Euripides, Aristophanes, Sophocles and Aeschylus.\u00a0 The Herodes Atticus amphitheatre seats 5,000 spectators and nowadays is used to host the Athens Festival during summer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0021.jpg.html\" title=\"Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16015-2\/athens_0021.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Acropolis, Athens\" \/><\/a>The fame of the Acropolis may cause it to be the victim of its own popularity.\u00a0 On this visit, there were three cruise\u00a0liner loads of visitors and the long queues and\u00a0jostling by some made the visit quite unpleasant.\u00a0 Sadly too, these appear to be the budget cruises and many of\u00a0the passengers were keen to rush up to the site, pose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0019.jpg.html\" title=\"The Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16011-2\/athens_0019.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"The Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"The Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens\" \/><\/a>for photos at every building&#8230; and that appeared to the extent of their interest.\u00a0 One of our fellow travellers had been there some 50 years ago and he was most disappointed at this experience.\u00a0 He recalled from his earlier visits\u00a0 how he was able to wander around and enjoy the serenity of the place and soak in its history.\u00a0 Peter would most certainly not return again.\u00a0 Would Perikles have been pleased to see that the building work that he had envisioned to represent the political and cultural achievements of Greece is now flooded by mass tourism?<\/p>\n<p>On the south porch of the Erechtheion is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16003-2\/athens_0015.jpg\" title=\"Porch of the Caryatids, Acropolis, Athens\">Porch of the Caryatids<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16003-2\/athens_0015.jpg\" title=\"Porch of the Caryatids, Acropolis, Athens\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/16003-2\/athens_0015.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Porch of the Caryatids, Acropolis, Athens\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Porch of the Caryatids, Acropolis, Athens\" \/><\/a>Statues of women were used to support the roof, \u00a0in place of columns.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is one of my favourite sights.\u00a0 The originals\u00a0of the statues have been\u00a0replaced by casts and four of the originals can be seen in the Acropolis Museum.\u00a0 The Propylaia was built in 437 BC to form a new entrance to the Acropolis and then there&#8217;s the Temple of Athena Nike, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Greece\/Athens\/athens_0019.jpg.html\" title=\"The Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens\">Parthenon <\/a>and the two theatres, all star attractions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In spite of the crowds, a visit to the Acropolis is a must and maybe next time the gods will be kind to us and spare us from cruise liners.<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Acropolis is the star attraction of Greece and is very much on the itinerary of every visitor to Athens.\u00a0 It contains four ancient buildings with most of the artifacts from the temples being housed in the Acropolis museum.
