{"id":28,"date":"2006-11-23T22:05:30","date_gmt":"2006-11-23T12:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=28"},"modified":"2006-11-23T22:05:30","modified_gmt":"2006-11-23T12:05:30","slug":"notes-from-france-cahors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/france\/notes-from-france-cahors","title":{"rendered":"Cahors &#8211; Country Roads of France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>We were told that Cahors is famous for truffles and that got our excitement up.\u00a0 We were fortunate to arrive in this little town when the Saturday morning market was on.\u00a0 French markets are great to walk through as you inevitably get to see and smell an amazing range\u00a0of\u00a0cheeses, sausages and other regional delicacies.\u00a0 Although we don&#8217;t eat meat, our favourite stall was a sausage stand where the vendor had decorative miniature model pigs, goats etc\u00a0amongst the sausages.\u00a0 Cahors is also famous for its <em>&#8216;black wine&#8217;<\/em> and this we did see a lot\u00a0in the market, no truffles though.\u00a0 It was a bit early for wine-tasting, but that didn&#8217;t stop some!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333333\">Behind the narrow streets of Cahors&#8217; Old Town you&#8217;ll find\u00a0the <em>Cathedral of Saint-\u00c9tienne<\/em>, the first church in France to have cupolas. The cathedral dates back to 1119 and has some fine medieval details.<\/font><\/p>\n<p>Cahors&#8217; main street\u00a0is the <em>boulevard Gambetta<\/em>.\u00a0 The town&#8217;s most notable\u00a0citizen, <em>Leon Gambetta<\/em>, was a French republican statesman who helped direct the defence of France during the Franco-German War of 1870-71.\u00a0Gambetta was very influential politically and\u00a0<font color=\"#333333\">played a pivotal role in transforming the\u00a0post-war regime\u00a0into a parliamentary republic.
