{"id":44,"date":"2007-05-05T00:34:50","date_gmt":"2007-05-04T14:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=44"},"modified":"2007-05-05T00:34:50","modified_gmt":"2007-05-04T14:34:50","slug":"christmas-in-europe-venice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/christmas-in-europe-2006\/christmas-in-europe-venice","title":{"rendered":"Venice &#8211; Christmas in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Our hotel, the Hotel Sant&#8217;Elena is named after the island of St. Elena.\u00a0 The hotel is a little distance away from St. Mark&#8217;s Square, however there is no problems going in and out as it is on the vaporetto route.\u00a0 The hotel&#8217;s\u00a0blurb says that it&#8217;s a 15 minute walk to St. Mark&#8217;s Square whereas I think it&#8217;s more like 15 minutes by boat.<\/p>\n<p>Being on the lagoon again brought back great memories of the previous times we were here.\u00a0 On the last\u00a0occasion we were here in summer and took endless trips up and down the Grand Canal as\u00a0we didn&#8217;t tire of seeing those ancient palaces lining the lagoon.\u00a0 These days they\u00a0have mostly been converted into expensive hotels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This morning we decided to do a tour of the Doges&#8217; Palace, previously the residence of the doges, who were the elected leaders of the Venetian republic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the Palace tour, we got back onto the Grand Canal up to the Rialto Bridge.\u00a0 Many of the shops on the bridge were shut and it was quite deserted.\u00a0 We nevertheless enjoyed exploring the back alleys and every now and then they would open\u00a0out into an interesting square.\u00a0 Without the swarms of tourists crowding out the place, you could see locals living their lives quietly around the square.
