{"id":76,"date":"2007-06-11T15:57:05","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T05:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/?p=76"},"modified":"2007-06-11T15:57:05","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T05:57:05","slug":"nile-river-cruise-aswan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/wordpress\/egypt\/nile-river-cruise\/nile-river-cruise-aswan","title":{"rendered":"Aswan &#8211; Nile River Cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"float: right\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1009507070974015\";\r\ngoogle_alternate_ad_url = \"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/google_adsense_script.html\";\r\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\r\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\r\ngoogle_ad_format = \"300x250_as\";\r\ngoogle_ad_type = \"text_image\";\r\n\/\/2007-06-30: TSBlog 300x250\r\ngoogle_ad_channel = \"2928184950\";\r\ngoogle_color_border = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_bg = \"FFFFFF\";\r\ngoogle_color_link = \"FF6600\";\r\ngoogle_color_text = \"000000\";\r\ngoogle_color_url = \"339933\";\r\n\/\/-->\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\r\n  src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\r\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>This morning we arrived at Aswan, Egypt&#8217;s southern-most city.\u00a0 Our first excursion for the morning was a trip to the Unfinished Obelisk.\u00a0 This semi-finished obelisk dates back to the New Kingdom and had it been finished, it would have weighed 1.8 million kgs and stood 41 m high.\u00a0 A flaw was discovered in the stone after three sides of the shaft were quarried.\u00a0 We all stood around and puzzled at how this gigantic rock would have been moved to the river and then transported\u00a0up river.\u00a0 Mohammed provided an explanation that sounded very easy in words, but I&#8217;m sure the execution of which would have cost many injuries and lives.\u00a0 Even with today&#8217;s machinery and techniques, it seemed a mammoth task.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9447-2\/DSC_0888.jpg?resize=150%2C98\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Temple of Philae\" height=\"98\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 98px\" title=\"Temple of Philae\" \/>Next we were transported to a jetty where our motorized boat was waiting to take us to Philae Island.\u00a0 Along the wharf many nubian traders were selling their handicraft.\u00a0\u00a0On arrival at Philae Island, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Egypt\/Aswan\/DSC_0887.jpg.html\">Cafeteria sign<\/a> welcomes you and pledges to serve you &#8216;whatever you want&#8217;.\u00a0 Philae was an important place of pilgrimage for the worshippers.\u00a0 It is believed that from this island Isis watched over the sacred island of Biga, one of the mythical burial sites of her husband Osiris. The rows of well-preserved colonnade leads to the Temple of Isis.<\/p>\n<p>As we wondered around, we came across an entrance with some steep steps descending\u00a0into the river.\u00a0 This turned out to be a\u00a0Nilometer.\u00a0 The walls were calibrated to record the level of water of the annual floods which in turn predicted what the crop yield of the following year would be.\u00a0 The Nilometer dates back to Pharaonic times.
