There were four colossal<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9335-2\/DSC_1015.jpg?resize=150%2C80\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Abu Simbel\" height=\"80\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 80px\" title=\"Abu Simbel\" \/> enthroned statues of Ramses II wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. The 33m high facade is breathtaking.\u00a0 The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was built in the 13th century to honor Ramses II.\u00a0 The Temple facade was buried in sand for centuries and only rediscovered by Swiss explorer Jean-Louis Burckhardt in 1813.\u00a0 The four colossi signify a unified Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"130\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/9367-2\/DSC_1033.jpg?resize=130%2C94\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Inner Sanctuary\" height=\"94\" style=\"width: 130px; height: 94px\" title=\"Inner Sanctuary\" \/>When you go in the Inner Santuary, you&#8217;ll see statues of Ramses II sitting with Amun-Ra, Ptah &amp; Ra_Harakhty.\u00a0 On two days of the year the sun&#8217;s rays reach these once gold-covered statues.\u00a0 In the hypostyle hall, the colossi on the southern pillars wear the Upper Egypt crown, whereas the northern ones wear the double crown of Upper &amp; Lower Egypt.\u00a0 At the Temple gate, you&#8217;ll see the giant key <em>&#8216;The Ankh&#8217;<\/em> that locks the Temple door.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Egypt\/AbuSimbel\/IMG_4508.jpg.html\">The Ankh <\/a>was a symbol of eternal life for the ancient Egyptians.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side you&#8217;ll find the Temple of Hathor, built by Ramses II to honor his favorite wife, Nefertari.\u00a0 Statues of goddess Hathor alternate with Ramses II on the facade of Queen Nefertari&#8217;s Temple.\u00a0 Its Hypostyle hall has Hathor-headed pillars.\u00a0 The temple is decorated with scenes of Ramses slaying Egypt&#8217;s enemies, watched upon by Nefertari.\u00a0 In the inner sanctuary, you&#8217;ll see a statue of Hathor in the form of a cow.<\/p>\n<p>After an amazing experience, we flew back to Aswan at midday.\u00a0 Abu Simbel is an experience not to be missed, even if initially you think that the cost is a bit steep for the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Helen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, those who chose to visit Abu Simbel had a very early morning start.\u00a0By now we knew the routine and our mourns and complaints were just noises we had to make in order to make ourselves feel better.\u00a0 There was some chaos at the airport, with multiple security checks, but hey, this all adds [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-77","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-nile-river-cruise"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 -
