The central attraction of the monastery is the St Peter&#8217;s Church.\u00a0 The present church building was constructed during the Romanesque period and then completedly renovated in the Baroque style in the 17th and 18th\u00a0 centuries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adLargerect\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1009507070974015\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"7417206609\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n<h4>Mozart at St Peter&#8217;s<\/h4>\n<p>Mozart often directed the orchestra and choir at this Abbey and played its organ. He premiered his famous <em>Mass in C Minor<\/em> at St Peter&#8217;s in 1783, with his wife Constanze singing the lead soprano role. As part of the Salzburg summer music festival in August the Mass in C Minor is traditionally performed here.<\/p>\n<p>Mozart&#8217;s most renowned <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classictic.com\/en\/mozart_piano_sonatas\/10048\/412358\/?fin=2a93e3e264622ac7b05881a8979e13e245e6cef9&#038;r=441\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Piano Sonatas<\/a><\/strong> can be enjoyed in this historic church\u00a0 throughout the year.<\/p>\n<h4>What to see inside St Peter&#8217;s<\/h4>\n<p>Visitors to St Peter&#8217;s will see a blend of architectural styles inside the abbey church. The basilica&#8217;s three aisles reflect\u00a0 its Romanesque architecture but it is the ornate Rococo decoration of the 1770s that dominate.\u00a0 Behind the Rupert altar is the Felsengrab, where St. Rupert is believed to be buried.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the art treasures in the church include altar paintings by Kremser Schmidt.\u00a0 In the left chancel is the<em> Salzburg Madonna<\/em> from the early 15th century and in the side chapel by the entrance one can see the <em>Flight into Egypt<\/em> and the <em>Massacre of the Innocents<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>St Peter&#8217;s Cemetery and Stiftskeller Restaurant<\/h4>\n<p>The famous <a title=\"St Peter's Cemetery, Salzburg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/sightseeing\/st-peters-cemetery-salzburg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. Peter&#8217;s Cemetery<\/strong><\/a> is in the grounds of the Abbey.\u00a0 Next to the Abbey is the legendary <a title=\"St Peter's Stiftskeller Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/food\/st-peter-stiftskeller-restaurant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. Peter Stiftskeller<\/strong>.<\/a> Founded a thousand years ago by the abbey&#8217;s monks, it serves traditional Austrian food at reasonable prices and is another place where visitors can enjoy Mozart Dinner Concerts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opening Times:<\/strong><br \/>\nDaily 8:00am-noon and 2:30pm-6:30pm (No visits permitted during mass!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Address:<\/strong><br \/>\nErzabtei St. Peter<br \/>\nSt. Peter Bezirk 1.<br \/>\nA-5010 Salzburg<\/p>\n<p><strong>Map of Salzburg:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. Peter&#8217;s Abbey &#8211; One of the Oldest Monasteries in Austria: One of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Austria and perhaps in the German-speaking nations is St. Peter&#8217;s Abbey (Erzabtei St. Peter) in Salzburg.
