On our <strong>Danube River cruise<\/strong> sailing westward from Vienna, Weissenkirchen was on the right bank of the Danube River, the next town past <strong><a title=\"D\u00fcrnstein \" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/river-cruises\/featured\/durnstein-danube-river-cruise\" target=\"_blank\">D\u00fcrnstein<\/a><\/strong> with its striking Wedgwood-like church tower.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adLargerect\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1009507070974015\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"7417206609\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n<h4>Weissenkirchen -a Wine Town<\/h4>\n<p>Our riverboat moored at the Weissenkirchen pier and from there it was an easy walk, across the railway track into town.<\/p>\n<p>Weissenkirchen is one of the top nine wine-cultivating towns in the Wachau and visitors come here to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Wachau Valley and to try some Wachau wines. In the lower part of town there are many guest houses (gastehaus), wine cellars (weinguts) and restaurants. Our first stop in Weissenkirchen was the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/at\/renaissancehotel-raffelsberger-hof.en-gb.html?aid=322131;\" title=\"Raffelsberger Hof, Weissenkirchen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rafflesbergerhof<\/a><\/strong> cellar where we enjoyed a pleasant <strong><a title=\"Weissenkirchen Wine-tasting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/river-cruises\/featured\/wine-tasting-in-weissenkirchen\" target=\"_blank\">Wachau wine-tasting<\/a><\/strong> session. This Gothic church was built in the 14th century but the defense tower was added in 1531 as part of the town&#8217;s fortification to protect the villagers from the plundering Ottomans. To get to the church, you walk 76 steps up a covered passage, which was built to protect villagers from attacks as they made their way to the church in the upper part of town. It was a steep twenty-minute climb up to <strong>Burgstiege<\/strong>, but the view was rewarding. In spite of the rain, we had an enjoyable visit of Weissenkirchen and can see this town being a good base for exploring the Wachau region which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
