Many tour companies do a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.partner.viator.com\/en\/2494\/tours\/Salzburg\/The-Original-Sound-of-Music-Tour-in-Salzburg\/d451-3595001A\" target=\"_self\"><strong>one day tour of Salzburg<\/strong><\/a>, visiting some of the main film locations.\u00a0 It&#8217;s astounding that these tours are still incredibly popular with overseas visitors in spite of this being a 1965 movie.<\/p>\n<p>We went along on a tour and met some Sound of Music fanatics, one American couple claiming to have seen the movie <strong>14 times<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>A great benefit of doing the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.partner.viator.com\/en\/2494\/search\/SALZBURG\" target=\"_self\">tour <\/a><\/strong>is that it takes you to many famous <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.partner.viator.com\/en\/2494\/tours\/Salzburg\/Grand-Salzburg-City-Tour-including-Hellbrunn-Palace-and-24-Hour-Salzburg-Card\/d451-3595001C\" target=\"_self\">sights of Salzburg<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Following are some of the tour sights:<\/p>\n<div class=\"adLargerect\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1009507070974015\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"7417206609\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>Mirabell Gardens and Mirabell Palace<\/strong> &#8211; At the Garden steps and around Pegasus Fountain is where Maria and the children sang <strong>&#8216;Do-Re-Mi&#8217;<\/strong>.  As you leave the Garden grounds you will pass through a gateway where two stone figures arch across the gate.  This was featured in the movie as well.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/sightseeing\/schloss-mirabell-and-gardens\" target=\"_self\">Read more about Mirabell Palace and Gardens here.&gt;<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Residenz Square and Residenz Fountain <\/strong>&#8211; Maria crosses Residenz Square in a bus on her way from Nonnberg Convent to the Trapp Villa singing <strong>&#8216;I have confidence in me&#8217;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Residenz contains some 180 rooms and three spacious courtyards and it was from here that the the prince archbishops of Salzburg held court and controlled the destiny of their country up to the 19th century.  Today the Residenz is the venue for official receptions, meetings and international conventions. <\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_657\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"highslide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2010\/11\/IMG_6083.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-657\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-657  \" src=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2009\/04\/IMG_6083-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Peter&#039;s Cemetery Chapel<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Felsenreitschule<\/strong> &#8211; The Trapp Family performed its farewell song and Baron von Trapp sang <strong>Edelweiss<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>St. Peter&#8217;s Cemetery<\/strong> &#8211; It was here that the dramatic flight scenes were filmed.  Maria and the children hid at the chapel before their escape.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is one of the oldest and most charming cemeteries in the world and it&#8217;s no wonder that it was selected as a film location. Many of Salzburg&#8217;s dignitaries, artists, scholars and merchants are buried here.  One of the cemetary&#8217;s special attractions are the &#8216;catacombs&#8217; hewn out of the M\u00f6nchsberg rock.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leopoldskron Palace<\/strong> &#8211; the fa\u00e7ade facing the lake represented the von Trapp residence.<\/p>\n<p><em>Acquired in 1736 by Leopold Anton Eleutherius Freiherr von Firmian, Prince Archbishop of Salzburg.  He named the Palace<strong> Leopoldskron<\/strong>, meaning <strong>Leopold&#8217;s crown<\/strong>.  The Palace passed through the hands of many owners since 1736, but Schloss Leopoldskron&#8217;s transformation was the most dramatic from 1918, during the time of Max Reinhardt. Max, a theater director who was famous throughout Europe, had a passion to restore the palace to its original splendor and invested large sums of money.  Today Leopoldskron Palace is privately owned and has, since 1947, been in the ownership of the American educational institution Salzburg Global Seminar, which has been addressing global issues for more than half a century. <\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_658\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"highslide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2010\/11\/IMG_6164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-658\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-658\" src=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2009\/04\/IMG_6164-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mondsee Cathedral<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>Sound of Music Pavillon<\/strong> &#8211; can be found at<strong> Hellbrunn Palace<\/strong> today, in the movie it was still located at Leopoldskron Palace. One of the most famous and romantic scenes was filmed here:  &#8216;I am 16 going on 17&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Other locations outside of the city where filming took place include at Anif Palace, Hohenwerfen Castles, Mondsee, Fuschl, St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.partner.viator.com\/en\/2494\/tours\/Salzburg\/Austrian-Lakes-and-Mountains-Salzburg-Sightseeing-Tour\/d451-3595002\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Mondsee <\/strong><\/a>was the only out of town location we stopped at.  At <strong>Mondsee Cathedral <\/strong>Baron von Trapp and Maria were married.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mondsee is a small touristy lakeside town within easy reach of Salzburg.
