It originated as the Roman fortress of <em>Lentia<\/em> and became an  important medieval trading centre. By the 13th century it had all of the outward characteristics of a city,  but none of a city&#8217;s rights. It became the provincial capital in the 15th century during the residence of the  Holy Roman emperor <em>Frederick III<\/em> and was noted for its fairs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"adLargerect\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1009507070974015\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"7417206609\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div>\n<h4>An important cultural centre<\/h4>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">The see of a Roman Catholic bishop since  1785, Linz has become an important cultural centre, with the Johannes Kepler University (1966), schools of art and music, a college-level Academy of Industrial and Art Design (1947), a seminary, scientific  institutes, museums and art galleries, libraries, archives, an opera house, and theatres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_860\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2011\/03\/linzrathaus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"size-full wp-image-860\" title=\"linzrathaus\" src=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2011\/03\/linzrathaus.jpg\" alt=\"Old Town Hall, Linz, Austria\" width=\"144\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old Town Hall, Linz<\/p><\/div>The city is rich in historic buildings, which include the <em>old castle<\/em>, <em>St. Martin&#8217;s Churc<\/em>h (first mentioned 799), the early Baroque <em>Town Hall<\/em>, the 13th-century <em>main square<\/em> with a monument to the Holy Trinity, the <em>City Parish Church<\/em> (13th century, remodeled 1648), the <em>Old Cathedral<\/em> (1669-78), the <em>Minorite  (Franciscan) Church<\/em> (13th century, remodelled 1752-58), and the 16th-century <em>Landhaus<\/em> (&#8220;State  House&#8221;). Also notable are the <em>monastic churches<\/em> (Capuchin, Ursuline, Carmelite), the neo-Gothic <em>New  Cathedral<\/em> (1862-1924), and the 19th-century <em>fortifications<\/em> built by <em>Archduke Maximilian d&#8217;Este<\/em>. The <em>bridge<\/em> (renewed 1938-39) across the Danube leads to the <em>Urfahr quarter<\/em> on the left bank beneath the <em>Postling Hill<\/em> (1,768 feet [539 m]).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>On the direct rail route between the Baltic and Adriatic seas<\/h4>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_861\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2011\/03\/linzdanube.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-861\" class=\"size-full wp-image-861\" title=\"linzdanube\" src=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Austria\/files\/2011\/03\/linzdanube.jpg\" alt=\"Linz is on the Danube in Austria\" width=\"144\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linz is on the Danube<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lying on a direct rail route between the Baltic and Adriatic seas, as well as on the Danube, Linz has  extensive docks and a busy river-transit trade. After 1938 it developed into an important industrial centre  with ironworks and steelworks and a nitrogen-fixation plant. War damage necessitated their  reconstruction after 1945.
