Bulgaria, a country that’s both old and new:<\/h3>\n

\nBulgaria can be said to be a country that’s very old as well as very new<\/strong>.\u00a0 It’s ancient history dates back to the Old Stone Age period of the 1st millenium B.C.<\/strong> and yet it wasn’t until 1989 that it broke away from the Eastern Bloc and became an independent country, with its new Constitution being enacted in 1991.\u00a0 From this time on, Bulgaria’s race to modernise itself included full membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO<\/strong>) in 2004 and in 2007 it joined the European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Bulgaria is a country that has gone through centuries of foreign invasion and occupation<\/strong>.\u00a0 A visit to Bulgaria therefore provides the possibility to explore its history from pre-historic times through to the period of the Alexander the Great, the harsh Ottoman period and then through its days as part of the Eastern Bloc.<\/p>\n

However, Bulgaria is more than a destination for history buffs<\/strong> only.\u00a0 It’s scenic landscape and sightseeing options make this an ideal destination<\/strong> all year around.\u00a0 So unique are its historic heritage<\/strong> that several landmarks have been included in the UNESCO heritage listing.\u00a0 Some of these are:<\/p>\n
