Miraculous powers are attributed this icon of the Black Madonna, making this an object of devotion by pilgrims. One of the famous miracles was in 1655 when Czestochowa was on the brink of being invaded by Swedish troops. A group of Polish soldiers prayed fervently before the Black Madonna, and the enemy retreated.
