This afternoon there was spare time to\u00a0shop in elegant Grafton Street, but we chose to continue exploring the city.\u00a0 At the junction of Grafton and Nassau <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17633-2\/DSC_0319.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Molly Malone sculpture\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Molly Malone sculpture\" \/>Streets, we came across the statue of Molly Malone as &#8220;She wheeled her wheelbarrow through the streets broad and narrow, crying cockles and mussels, alive alive-oh..&#8221;.\u00a0 Apparently, apart from being a fishmonger, Molly also worked as a part-time hooker, hence her nickname the &#8216;tart with the cart&#8217;.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17659-2\/DSC_0338.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"James Joyce\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"James Joyce\" \/>\u00a0 She died in one of the outbreaks of cholera that regularly\u00a0swept the city of Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connell Street was in the throes of development so taking shots of the statue of James Larkin was a challenge.\u00a0 James Larkin was leader of the Dublin general strike in 1913.\u00a0 In O&#8217;Connell Street you&#8217;ll also see The Spire of Dublin, a 120 metre high landmark in the heart of Dublin City which\u00a0was unveiled in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0huge, needle-like monument stands in the middle of O&#8217;Connell Street just across from the famous General Post Office.\u00a0\u00a0 I believe locals have a less-endearing nickname for the the structure.\u00a0 The Spire marked the\u00a0beginning of the reconstruction of a new public domain for O\u2019Connell Street which saw the creation of a new plaza at the General Post Office, a new tree lined boulevard and kiosks along the street.<\/p>\n<p>At the northern end of Earl Street is <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/17675-2\/DSC_0346.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Liffey Bridge\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Liffey Bridge\" \/>the statue of James Joyce.\u00a0 We then walked along the Liffey.\u00a0 It was a brilliantly sunny day and these Dubliners were making the best of the warm weather.\u00a0 Further on is Ha&#8217;penny Bridge &#8211; so named because of the halfpenny toll that was levied.\u00a0 The Ha&#8217;penny Bridge is Dublin&#8217;s oldest pedestrian crossing over the River Liffey.\u00a0 Erected in 1816 as the Wellington Bridge, it later acquired its better known nickname from the halfpenny toll that was levied on users of the bridge up to 1919.<\/p>\n<p>There was just too much to cover in a day and we decided to continue with the exploration tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Helen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAY 8\u00a0 &#8211; There is a lot to do and see in Dublin and the guide took us\u00a0through a cracking pace.\u00a0 Our first site was Phoenix Park, Europe&#8217;s largest enclosed city park.\u00a0 Phoenix Park originated in 1662 when the Duke of Ormond turned land into a deer park.\u00a0 The Irish President\u2019s home is also set [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,29],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-138","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-britain-ireland","category-ireland"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 -
