Old city walls\">Veliko Turnovo<\/a>, the Town of Kings, was the ancient capital of Bulgaria.\u00a0 The Palace of the Bulgarian sovereigns and Bulgarian <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/37018-2\/AJP_2827.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Veliko Turnovo\" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Veliko Turnovo\" \/>Patriarch Church were situated here and it was the centre of political and cultural life.\u00a0 Bulgaria was then the largest and most powerful state in the southeastern European region and it played a major role in the international political relations.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/36912-2\/AJP_2788.jpg?resize=110%2C85\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Veliko Turnovo -Old Market town \" height=\"85\" style=\"width: 110px; height: 85px\" title=\"Veliko Turnovo -Old Market town \" \/>Samovodska Charshla is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2788.jpg.html\" title=\"Veliko Turnovo - Old market town\">old market town <\/a>in Veliko Turnovo.\u00a0 In the early 19th century, when the town was rapidly developing, there emerged a shopping centre with lots of retail outlets and artisan workshops, bakeries and cafes.\u00a0 The artisans in the shops existing today follow traditional methodologies of work to try to re-create the Renaissance atmosphere.\u00a0 Important Tamovlan inns were located here, the most <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/36882-2\/AJP_2776.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Emillian Sanev - Veliko Turnovo\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Emillian Sanev - Veliko Turnovo\" \/>popular among them was in Hadji Nikoli Inn.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/36942-2\/AJP_2799.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Stefan Stambolov\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Stefan Stambolov\" \/>Our visit to this city started at the Samovodene Marketplace.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s Georgi Sava Rakovski Street was previously the main trading and craftsmen&#8217;s area during the 19th century.\u00a0 We came across the statue and museum-house of the imminent Bulgarian writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2776.jpg.html\" title=\"Emillian Stanev - Veliko Turnovo\">Emillian Stanev <\/a>.\u00a0 At the giftshop in the market square, the shop assistant suggested that we take a look at the House with the Monkey and pointed us in the direction.\u00a0 At the top of the main street was a large monument of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2799.jpg.html\" title=\"Stefan Stambolov - Veliko Turnovo\">Stefan Stambolov<\/a>, an active figure from the <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/36916-2\/AJP_2790.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"House of the Monkey - Veliko Turnovo\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"House of the Monkey - Veliko Turnovo\" \/>time of the Bulgarian liberation, who later became Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 1887 &#8211; 1894.<\/p>\n<p>Just past Stambolov&#8217;s statue, we could see the usual brickwork of The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2790.jpg.html\" title=\"House of the Monkey - Veliko Turnovo\">House of the Monkey<\/a>.\u00a0 Built in 1849, it was one of the masterpieces of the Bulgarian masterbuilder Kolyu Ficheto.\u00a0 On the facade of the ground floor is a figurine of a sitting monkey &#8211; I&#8217;m not sure what its meant to symbolize.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"left\" width=\"90\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/37024-2\/AJP_2830.jpg?resize=90%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Monument of the Assens\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 90px; height: 110px\" title=\"Monument of the Assens\" \/>Next we went in search of Gurko Street, which wasn&#8217;t too easy to find.\u00a0 The houses along this street are picturesque and a little further down we found our view of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2830.jpg.html\" title=\"Monument of the Assens\">Monument of the Assens<\/a>.\u00a0 The monument is dedicated to the Bulgarian kings Assen I and II who reigned Bulgaria during the height of its political, economic and cultural point.\u00a0 The Monument was built in honor of the 800th anniversary from the proclamation of Turnovo as the capital of <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"3\" align=\"right\" width=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/d\/37012-2\/AJP_2823.jpg?resize=85%2C110\" hspace=\"3\" alt=\"Old City Walls - Veliko Turnovo\" height=\"110\" style=\"width: 85px; height: 110px\" title=\"Old City Walls - Veliko Turnovo\" \/>Bulgaria.\u00a0 Situated on a beautiful terrace above the Yantra River, it looks really dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>We then rushed back to our meeting place and from the hotel lounge we had a magnificent view of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelsignposts.com\/Destination\/v\/Bulgaria\/VelikoTurnavo\/AJP_2823.jpg.html\" title=\"Old city walls -
