Shopping in Paris Department Stores
The huge Parisian department stores with their Art Nouveau glass domes are considered to be amongst Europe's leading shopping centres with 120 million visitors each year. The most well-known are on the boulevard Haussmann, but there are also stores on the rue de Rivoli, on the Left Bank and at the Madeleine.
BUYING TIP: Twice a year there are major sales (les soldes) in July (and the beginning of August) and January (runs over into February). Regulated by the government, these official sales periods are the only times the shops are allowed to put previous store items on sale. Worth making an effort to be there!
What's more, La Samaritaine, Printemps, Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché provide tourists with 10% discount cards, and these are valid in the sales as well.
In addition to the 10% discount, you can qualify for a tax refund (le détaxe) if you spend €175 in one day in one store. So, if you have a lot of different things to buy, you are definitely better off shopping in a department store where you can get a tax refund of 12%.

Located between Les Halles and the Pont Neuf, this is a five-store complex which prides itself as the one where "on trouve tout". It owes its name to the hydraulic pump installed near the Pont-Neuf which operated from 1609 to 1813. On the front of the pump was a gilded bas relief showing the good Samaritan talking to Christ at Jacob's well. The store now occupies four buildings, and the café on the roof of store number two offers a 360 degree view of Paris.
