Durnstein, also known as "Pearl of the Wachau" is a very pretty little baroque town on the bank of the Danube, as you cruise downstream from Melk. It was here that Richard the Lion-Heart was held captive in 1192. The legend of Blondel, his faithful minstrel, who traced his King to Durnstein, is alive and well in the village! If arriving by river, you'll be greeted by the beautiful wedgewood baroque tower of the Stiftskirche.
