Stonegate - The name of this street derives from the fact that it was a Roman stone-paved street.
Stonegate was the Via Praetoria of the Roman fortress of Eboracum. It was in daily use for about 1900 years. According to the Minster Library records, Guy Fawkes of the Gunpowder Plot fame was born in Stonegate. Guy attended St Peter's School, Bootham in York. To this day the school refused to burn effigies of their old boy on November 5th. [York - Yorkshire - England]
