Novgorod is the oldest walled city in Russia and the historic walls of the Novgorod Kremlin were built as early as 864. The original ramparts were built of wood. With the renovation of the fortress between 1484-90 the wooden walls were replaced with bricks. There are 1,385 metres of walls and they are 3.3 metres thick and 10.9 metres high.
