When to travel to Lithuania and Vilnius: weather and seasonsWith four distinct seasons, the Lithuania climate is humid continental, with a moderating maritime influence from the Baltic Sea. As a result, it largely remains pleasant for most of the year. The climate of the country is transitional between the maritime type of western Europe and the continental type found farther east. Lithuania's climate is mild although it can be cold in winter, with conditions more variable in the eastern portion of the republic where the capital, Vilnius, is situated. Summer brings average temperatures of 18°C (65°F) with afternoon highs from 25-28°C (in the 70s and 80s °F) and plenty of rain. Summer is the wettest season and cloudy skies are common, with rain often coming in July and increasing as the summer progresses. July is the hottest month, when mid-summer temperatures can reach up to 30°C. In some mountain areas however, temperatures vary from 18 to 24°C and can easily drop to a cool 5°C at night. Summer days are long, with only a few hours of darkness. When the weather turns cool, operas and ballets offer respite from cold, grey skies. In Lithuania spring weather is similar but it is rarely raining and sun is shining almost everyday. Winter, which lasts from November to mid-March, can be very cold with temperatures usually below freezing point. Heavy snowfalls are common. Winters tend to be cold, damp, and overcast, and days are very short. The coastal regions experience a drop in the temperature during the month of January. Despite the milder climate on the coast, winters can often seem extremely cold because of the piercing coastal winds. Heavy winter clothing, boots, and rainwear are a must.
