Getting around Paris by Rail (RER)
The RER (Réseau Express Régional)
The RER combines a city-centre subway and a suburban rail system. Within Paris, the RER basically serves as an express network offering multiple connections to the Paris Métro.
The RER network connects geographically opposed Paris suburbs, providing rapid east-west and north-south links. Currently there are 5 RER lines, each split up into branch lines.
In Paris itself, the RER runs underground; elsewhere, it runs mostly on the surface. Both in Paris and in its suburbs, the RER network connects with metro, bus and tram services. Destinations outside the city include CDG Airport, Versailles, and Disneyland Paris.
RER services run 7 days a week, from 4.45 a.m. until 1.30 a.m. Train timetables are displayed in stations and on platforms.
