Titanic History and the Queenstown Story This little town of Cobh is well remembered for the role it played during the Mass emigration of the Irish people during the great famine. Of the 6.5 million who left, more than 2.5 million left from the port of Cobh, making this town the biggest single point of emigration.
With its natural deep harbour, Cobh was one of the largest and safest habours in the past and luxury liners used to call in here during the transatlantic journeys. Cobh was the last port of call for the Titanic before its sinking in 1912. It's other unfortunate association with luxury liners is the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine in 1915.
