Portugal Phone Number, Portugal Telephone Code, Portugal Telephone Directory

telephone-blue_300Finding a phone number for a house or business, or a mobile (cell) phone number in Portugal was quite straightforward, not so easy now. As far as a Portugal telephone directory is concerned, Portugal Telecom (PT) had an effective monopoly, but in June 2015 it was bought by the Altice Group based in France. Now the white and yellow pages sites seem to have disappeared.

The Portugal telephone country code is 351, and then you simply dial the subscriber phone number. Previously, the trunk prefix was ‘0’, but this was dropped, and the phone area code, prefixed by the digit ‘2’ was incorporated into the subscriber’s number, so now a nine-digit number is used for all calls. Check out this page on Wikipedia for more details and area codes

Mobile phone numbers in Portugal also changed, with the digits ‘9T’ replacing the prefix ‘093T’, where ‘T’ is a digit specific to a mobile operator: Optimus – 93 TMN – 96 Vodafone – 91.

Free telephone number search

As mentioned above, these official directory sites have disappeared and other online “white pages” etc. sites just seem to send you to Google.pt or have no real content (cf. portuguesetelephones.com). I haven’t had much luck with Altice so I’m afraid my phone number search for Portugal is limited to the yellow pages beta site at the moment, sorry. If you have any better luck, please let me know!

Hi, Just looking at your blog about telephony in Portugal. Trying to find an old listing (1990) for a family in Viseu. Any idea of how to go about finding a directory?

That’s a difficult one! I presume you’ve checked the current directories and had no luck, and unfortunately AFAIK there is no facility for getting (extremely) old editions on line. You might try contacting the family living in their old house on the off chance they’ve been there since the family you’re trying to trace moved, and they’ve got an old forwarding address. Sorry, not much help!

I’m in the UK and trying to find telephone or email details for someone from England who has been living in Portugal for years. I was in email contact until late 2017. Then “life happened” and when I emailed again I find he’s obviously no longer keeping a UK address (that was in Bebington) and the email address must be obsolete now. I’ve spent quite a while trying to find a directory enquiries option for Portugal without any luck. All the links seem obsolete. I’d be really grateful if you could suggest any current sites I could check.
    Many thanks.

      Hi Mark,
Like you, I’ve spent some time looking for new directories, but haven’t had much luck. I’ve updated the post to reflect this. All the sites I checked seemed to be just marketing or scraper sites with no real info to pass on.
Not much use, I’m afraid, but if you find anything, I’d be grateful if you’d let me know. We were going back to Portugal, but with Covid we’re here in Australia for a while, I think!

    Hello,

This web page no longer exists:
    http://www.white.yellowpages.pt/
Is there another way to reach director assistance for Portugal?
    Thanks!

Yes, Glen, you’re quite right! I have now edited the post to point this out. Since Altice bought it they seem to have just neglected the telephone side of things, too busy spinning off their US subsidiary perhaps…
I haven’t had much luck myself, as you can see, sorry!

When I was in a hotel in Portugal they had a telephone directory in the bedside cupboard. I found someone I knew who’d moved to Portugal a few years before. Phone a hotel near the area where you think your friend may be (most speak English and are very helpful) and ask them to look it up for you. You never know!
