Koblenz is the site of the Bundesgartenschau 2011 (BUGA Koblenz 2011), the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show, and this town on the Upper Middle Rhine will literally be in bloom.

‘Koblenz in Bloom’ will dazzle visitors for six months from 15 April to 16 October 2011. Situated on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, the centre of Koblenz will be a magnificent sea of flowers during the Bundesgartenschau.

Bundesgartenschau covers 315 000 m² of exhibition space which is spread across three sites: the Elector’s Palace, Blumenhof Gardens by the Deutsches Eck and the fortress plateau of Ehrenbreitstein. The floral exhibitions include spring and summer flowers, rhododendrons, roses, herbaceous perennials and more.  As well as magnificent floral displays and show gardens, around 3,000 Koblenz events will be staged over 185 days.

The Bundesgartenschau also features:

  • riverside promenades
  • an exhibition of wines from all regions
  • guided tours of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
  • exhibitions about the Prussian landscape gardener Joseph Lenné, and
  • Rhineland-Palatinate’s UNESCO World Heritage sites

Every day, numerous different events are presented, assisted by several thousand volunteers from around Rhineland-Palatinate, to illustrate the cultural diversity of the region. The focus is on Romanticism of the Rhine, its UNESCO World Heritage credentials, art and treasures of the region.

There is also a lot to see and do in and around Koblenz.

Koblenz’s new cable car – the longest in Europe outside the Alps – is one of the Bundesgartenschau’s special attractions.  Its 18 gondolas take visitors across the Rhine from Deutsches Eck up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, a distance of 850 metres, providing breathtaking aerial views of the Rhine and Moselle. For those with a fear of heights, there is a shuttle bus that runs several times a day.

If you’re planning on attending this garden extravaganza, book your Koblenz hotels early.  Around two million visitors are expected to attend this family-friendly event.

**NOTE:**
Bundesgartenschau 2011 concluded successfully on October 16th and the baton has been handed to Hamburg for their International Garden show (IGS) in 2013.
