WeihnachtsZauber – Berlin Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market:

Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market

Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market

The WeihnachtsZauber on Gendarmenmarkt is one of Berlin’s most popular and stylish Christmas markets during the festive season and for a very good reason. This centrally located Christmas market is framed by the Französischer Dom, the Konzerthaus and the Deutscher Dom. With more than 1,000 strings of fairy lights sparkling in the evenings, it is truly romantic.

WeihnachtsZauber

Berlin’s WeihnachtsZauber on Gendarmenmarkt is one of our favourite Christmas markets and is a regular stop on our German Christmas market visits. This trendy and more elegant market attracts some 600,000 visitors from around the world each year. The market stalls are housed under white tents transforming Gendarmenmarkt into a small tent city.

What to Buy at WeihnachtsZauber

Traditional exhibitors at the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market include glassblowers, candle makers as well as jewellers. There’s also an origami master, an embroiderer, a milliner and an ivory-carver offering their high-quality goods.

Christmas Treats

One of the best parts of visiting Christmas markets is to see what Christmas specialities are on offer at the market stands.

Traditional Christmas Foods

Stalls stacked with stollen, marzipan breads and cakes, nougat, etc. are a delight for people like me, who love these German sweets.

Mutzenmandeln

Mutzenmandeln

On a previous trip here our friend Stephan introduced us to mutzenmandeln. These almond-shaped little snacks are deep-fried, then rolled in confectioners sugar and served piping hot. They are very popular with Berliners especially at festival time, but we didn’t think it was a taste sensation.

Music and Entertainment

The Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market is busy during the day, but when night falls, it gets even busier with locals calling in after work. On the large stage, there is entertainment by renowned artists who help put the crowds into the festive spirit.

Brass bands, jazz bands and choral groups provide ongoing entertainment and add to the Christmas spirit. With a mug of gluhwein in hand, we join the locals in enjoying the music.

Food at WeihnachtsZauber

There are stalls selling the traditional bratwurst and other snack foods. But if you want to take refuge from the cold, some of the restaurants offer dining in covered and heated tents.

After checking out the range of food on offer, we decide on a pizza and a glass of wine at Enoiteca Il Calice.

A Christmas Wish

If you hang around till a little later, Christmas angels make an appearance and grant visitors little wishes, if they’ve been good.

2021 Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market

It is with much excitement that the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market and Berlin’s other Christmas markets will open this year after 2020 closures due to the Coronavirus. The markets start from November 22, 2021 to December 31, 2021 and operate from 11:00 to 22:00 each day, except for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when it shuts at 18:00.
Note: For security reasons, backpacks and suitcases are not permitted.
