House, Business or Mobile (Cell) Phone Numbers in France

telephone-blue_300Finding a French phone number (or "Numéro Téléphone France"), whether for someone’s house or business, is easy if you read French or have the Google tool bar to do the translation, as the major French telephone directories don’t use English.

All French phone numbers are ten digits, starting with a zero if you’re using France Telecom or the number of a provider (e.g. Cegetel uses 7), when dialled from within France, i.e. they include the area phone code. The France country code is 33, and you omit the initial zero or provider’s number when calling from outside the country. "Téléphone portable" (mobile or cell phone to you) numbers start with 06 or 07 for newer numbers.

PAGES BLANCHES
http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/pagesblanches/
:
It says "Pages Jaunes" at the top but "white pages" on the search box. This is the official white pages of France, including the French overseas territories and departments. You search by names of people, and now it’s only in French, but the Google tool bar translation is fine.

To use it put in the last name in "Nom", and optionally the first name in "Prénom". Then enter some geographic area, such as the city, departement or region (click on the question mark for a list of regions), and press "trouver" to search. For businesses, click on the "les professionels" tab. For reverse search (search by number: http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/trouverunnom/aquiestcenumero.do) click on the "A qui donc il est ce numéro" tab and enter the ten digit number.

PAGES JAUNES
http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/:
Official Yellow Pages for France, including overseas dependencies. Now in French only, but translate via the Google tool bar: enter the type of business (in French) or any part of the business name in "Quoi, Qui", and a geographic location (city, region etc) in "Où" and press "trouver" to search.

118 218 LE NUMERO
http://www.118218.fr/:
National directory to find businesses and individuals. In French. To find people select "Je echerche un particulier" and businesses: "Je cherche un professionnel". Includes reverse search: (Sur l’annuaire inversé) where you type in as if you were in France, e.g. 04 93 68 93 68.

I got a call from France but the number is of just 4 digits attached to 33 at the first. Is it a spam?

I don’t know of any French telephone number that would only have four digits, even if you were in France. Even emergency calls are three.

      Hope this helps,

There are some “special” telephone numbers of only 4 digits, such as La Poste and SNCF. I am unclear whether it is possible to call them from the UK though, as there is no leading zero to drop when prefixing with 0033.

Does anyone know the answer as I would like to get in touch with La Poste by phone?

I’m sorry, Dil, we have no information on how to take action against phone spammers in France from a foreign country.
We have similar problems here in Australia from foreign spammers, but unfortunately can only bar the number on our own phones, which is not much use as the spammers regularly change their numbers and/or bar caller ID (we simply get “overseas caller” as an ID).

We’re currently in Central Asia exploring the Silk Road. Unfortunately, due to limited internet access, we’re not able to do any search on your behalf except to suggest that you try the Central switchboard of France Telecom in Paris on +33 1 4444 2222.
      Good luck.

I’m sorry Pierre, apart from the phone directories, we don’t have any other information on how you can track down your friend. A suggestion would be to email the Town Hall in Lyon and ask if they can assist you.

      Hello Stacey,

The (0) is a standard feature and you only dial it if you are calling within a country (in which case of course you will not be dialling the country code).

Ramesh, I suggest that you ignore phone numbers that you are not familiar with. There are a lot of scam calls these days. If it was a relative who wanted to get in touch, they surely would leave a message for you.

    Hi,
I am Norwegian, but this number from France suddenly called me and knew my full name (from Toulon). Who is this? It was a bit scary. Is it a scam, or pishing, threat of doxing, found something on me, or answer from a blood sample I took in Norway 2 month prior, I have no idea.
I hang up after he said “is this –my full name–”

      Hi Mads,

Not listed as a spammer, AFAICS. It’s usually relatively easy to find out your full name and corresponding telephone number on the internet as most people have given that information to myriad websites over the years, and others, if not you, can be hacked. Check https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if your email (and therefore possibly other information) has featured in a known hacking exploit.
      Good Luck!

06 in France is a mobile number and is therefore not location specific.
