The Frankfurt Christmas market (Frankfurter Weihnachtsmarkt) claims to be one of the oldest in Germany – it seems that there has been a Christmas market in Frankfurt since 1393.

With its rich history and steeped in traditions, the Frankfurt Christmas Market is a huge attraction for visitors from all over the world. Each year more than three million visitors flock to Frankfurt to enjoy this city’s Weihnachtsmarkt, making Frankfurt one of the more important Christmas markets in terms of visitor numbers.

Being the finance centre of Germany, Frankfurt’s skyline is outlined by the many high-rise towers of banks and insurance companies. But Frankfurt’s Altstadt is something else.

The historic centre is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year but at Christmas, Römerberg, Paulsplatz and Mainkai (Main Quay) are transformed into a Winter Wonderland. There are more than 200 stalls at the Frankfurt market offering arts and crafts and lots of traditional Christmas treats.

Food to keep you warm

The Christmas Market is a good place to shop for Christmas gifts and decorations and also to stock up on Christmas specialty foods. To keep up your energy in the cold weather, there are plenty of hot food to enjoy.

The grilled meat and sausages are always popular

Around the 30-metre Christmas tree, a wide range of entertainment takes place, including concerts on the Römerberg stage, trumpet fanfares from the balcony of St. Nicholas Church and the church carillon. And as you stroll around the Christmas market, enjoy the all too familiar aroma of roasted nuts, cinnamon, gingerbread and mulled wine. By the way, it’s possible to visit the rooftop balustrade of St. Nicholas Church, but only if weather conditions permit.

And for those who want to learn more about Frankfurt’s Christmas market, Frankfurt’s Tourism Authority runs guided tours where visitors can learn more about glühwein and other Christmas culinary specialties, hear stories about Frankfurt’s Christmas traditions and learn more about the city’s history along the way.

These 90-minute tours run from December 10 – 22nd. To book your tickets, contact the Frankfurt tourism at erlebnis@infofrankfurt.de.  Meeting point is the Tourist Information stand on Römerberg.
