Touring Tours & Travel Coaches have been Travelling the Romantic Road since 1950:

Romantic Road by Europabus

You don’t need to be on a driving holiday of Germany to experience the Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse).  If you don’t like driving or only have a short time in Frankfurt or Munich, you can actually travel by bus and experience the Romantic Road.

Touring Tours & Travel is a company that has been running coaches along Germany‘s oldest scenic route for six decades. The company has been transporting visitors along the Romantic Road for as long as the Romantic Road existed.

When the Romantic Road was created in 1950, the founding fathers were quick to recognize the need to provide transport connections in the area, particularly for international visitors. (How I wish these people would organize our transport system!)  The former railway authorities in Augsburg introduced the Romantic Road long-distance bus route in the spring of 1950, and up till today, the coaches still provide a link to Frankfurt and Munich international airports.

Romantic Road Coach Schedule

Touring Tours & Travel coaches leave Frankfurt and Füssen at 08:00 am from mid-April to October. Depending on the direction of travel, they pass the Residenz Palace in Würzburg, drive along the vineyards in the Tauber Valley, and then head to Bad Mergentheim, Weikersheim and Rothenburg ob der Tauber where they make a lunch stop. They also make stops at the medieval towns of Dinkelsbühl , Nördlingen and Augsburg where anyone wishing to get to Munich can catch the train to the Bavarian capital. From Augsburg, the journey continues towards the famous castles of King Ludwig, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.  Photo opportunity stops are also made at Feuchtwangen and the Wieskirche church which is a UNESCO world heritage site along with Roman border defenses (Limes) near Dinkelsbühl and the Würzburg Residenz Palace and also on the Romantic Road.

Travellers can break the journey whenever they wish.  If you’re cycling or walking the route, you can use the service for luggage transfer.

Tickets can be purchased online and also on the coach.  For more information about bus schedules, fares and booking tickets refer to Europbus website at www.romanticroadcoach.de. Touring Tours & Travel also does Romantic Road tours, as do Viator who have a range of packages covering the route.

We will be travelling from Wuerzburg to Fussen at the end of May. We have a Eurail pass. Should we take the train or the bus? It seems that if we travel by train we will be able to get off and visit some towns on the route. The bus ride seems longer.

      Hi Shirley,

The bus journey takes longer because it stops for half an hour in main towns like Weikersheim, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen and Augsburg which allows you time to have a quick look-around the town centre. The Romantic Road bus takes you right into the historic centre of the Romantic Road towns whereas the train stations are usually a bit further out. For example, in Wurzburg, the Romantic Road bus stops in front the Residenz, whereas the central station is about 13 minutes walk away.

We spent three weeks exploring the Romantic Road towns by bus and found it a very convenient way to get around. Along the way, the bus takes you past beautiful countryside and through the charming towns and villages. The train will certainly get you to the main towns faster, but you don’t see so much. You’ll also need to consider if there are good train connections for the stops that you wish to make.

In my opinion, the Romantic Road is best explored by car or bus.

      Kind regards,
      Helen
