A Spectacular Jean-Paul Gaultier Curated Musical at the Friedrichstadt-Palast
A friend recommended that we see the “Falling in Love” musical at Berlin’s famous Friedrichstadt-Palast. We were initially a bit doubtful about it, but our friend sang its praises, and with Jean-Paul Gaultier as the Visual Design Director, we could not resist giving it a try.
Brilliant use of colour, dazzling staging, startlingly original costumes
The story-line of “Falling in Love” is a fantasy, so don’t expect any deep meaning in the plot. Although it’s mostly in German, it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the language. This is a spectacular visual show, with brilliant use of colour, dazzling staging, startlingly original costumes and goodness knows how many hundred thousand Swarovski crystals. It is an amazing demonstration of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s creative genius.
A very energetic mix of ballet, modern dance, chorus line high kicks
The show is a very energetic mix of ballet, modern dance, chorus line high kicks (I counted 32 girls in a row, but given the speed everything was going on, I could be wrong!) and amazing trampoline acrobatics which had the tumblers flying all over the place. The men in the crowd were very thrilled at the chorus line girls with their high kicking and wonderfully synchronized dance movements.
Except for the Grand Finale, no photos are allowed, so here are a few that we can share with you.
“Falling in Love” plays till July 2024. If you enjoy musicals and plan on being in Berlin, this is a must-see.
Tip: Book yourselves seats up front and in the centre if possible to see the best of the costumes and performers. We were right in the front row and enjoyed it up-close.
