IGS 2013 Encompasses Seven Worlds, 80 Gardens and 100 Hectares of Park:
Garden show lovers will be pleased to know that the International Gartenschau Hamburg will take place from April 26th to October 13th, 2013. Titled “Around the World in 80 Gardens” the Hamburg Gartenschau showcases 80 imaginative gardens covering more than 100 hectares of land – the equivalent of 140 football fields.
IGS 2013 will be held at Inselpark Wilhelmsburg on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg, a district of Hamburg. Although Hamburg has a long tradition of garden shows stretching as far back as 1869, the Inselpark garden show is the first international garden show by the River Elbe for 40 years. This six-month long summer garden show in the heart of Hamburg is huge and organizers are expecting some 2.5 million visitors.
Hamburg Gartenschau
The gardens of IGS 2013 have been designed by renowned national and international landscape architects. The 80 gardens are allocated into seven different theme worlds: World of Ports, World of Water, World of Cultural Diversity, World of Continents, World of Activity, World of Religions and World of Nature. They not only show floral highlights, exotic plants and spices, but through the seven worlds take visitors on a journey through the cultural, climatic and vegetation zones of this earth. You can also take a monorail ride on the 3.4 kilometre-long circuit and have a fascinating view of the impressive garden landscapes.
Entertainment and Research
Hamburg is the theatre capital of Germany and during the six months of the Hamburg Gartenschau, Inselpark Wilhelmsburg will become an open-air stage for concerts, cultural events and activities for both the young and older visitors. IGS will also be a big research laboratory: With more than 1,000 educational activities on offer, children, school pupils and adults will be inspired to take an interest in green issues.
Tickets are very affordable. A day pass is only Euro 21, with concessions available for students and the disabled.
Inselpark Wilhelmsburg is a barrier-free park.
Hotels in Wilhelmsburg
As Wilhelmsburg is easily reached by train from the Hamburg main station, hotels within easy reach of Hamburg main train station will give you easy access to the garden show. There is a cluster of hotels near the main train station and these include the Hotel Europäischer Hof, Maritim Hotel Reichshof Hamburg and the Hotel Kronprinz Novum which are directly opposite Hamburg Hbf and the Hotel Graf Moltke Novum which is approximately 100 metres from the station.
